Home recording studios have become a fact of life with more and more finished products going straight from the spare room to the distributor. As a result there is a need for flexible, professional headphone monitoring sufficient for a number of performers, all at a reasonable cost. Basic headphone amps offer one set of stereo inputs and volume-controlled headphone outputs, however more options are needed in the studio. For example, it may be necessary to connect more than one stereo source - possibly the aux. or monitor output from the mixer plus the stereo output of a tape deck or CD player. It may also be necessary to insert reverb or EQ on certain headphone channels, and to interconnect two headphone amps for additional performers. Naturally, there needs to be a level control for each headset, clean, accurate reproduction and plenty of power.

• Stereo 1/4-inch & 1/8-inch inputs (wired parallel)

This headphone amp is well designed from the point of view of what is useful in a studio recording louder music. You just cannot go wrong with four 1/4 and 1/8 outs. However, due to its incredibly high noise floor and dynamic high end distortion (shrill), it is not recommended to those working mainly with quiter acoustic sources. Please, do not get me wrong, I own the unit, use it and like it (moderately), I appreciate its features, but I am also aware of its major limitations. Yes, it is very handy, yet at times it is also disappointing.

I purchased a pair of Beyerdynami DT770 pro 250 ohms, and my Steinberg UR12 wasn't able to feed them enough power. the power output just wasn't there (it is a pre-amp). But this 4 channel headphone amp works wonders. I wish they had a single output and a power button, I forgot mine turned on all night and all day while I'm at work, hope it doesn't take a lot of energy. and I get to feed my curiosity and test this against 4 other headsets.

Had it for years and Ive never had any issues. Im sure theres better quality out there if you want to spend. The only thing that bothers me is that theres no power switch and you have to unplug it and plug it in when you want to use it.

Solid build for the money, but no power switch and headphone jacks on the rear make this less user friendly than it could be.

In a world of headphone amps that typically start at over a hundred, this affordable little guy comes packed with 4 independent channels, with support for 8 headphones. The inputs and outputs support both 1/8 and 1/4 jack types, which is great and very thoughtful. I bought this for podcasting, and for that intent, it scores a perfect 5. Having everyone have access to their own volume levels is wonderful. I bought another one for a gift for my parents, so they can listen to TV at night together, each with their own volume control. The audio quality isn't audiophile grade, but its completely acceptable most of the time. I wouldn't buy this to power a HD-650 headset, but I've tried it and it works well enough to be usable for things like watching TV. It doesn't go super loud, but I haven't needed to crank it to full yet. I did find a small bit of hiss at max volume, but that might of been the noise floor in the signal rather than the amp. A few things to note: There is no limiter or anti-clipping in this -- if you are using this for podcasting, and a microphone clips --- your ears will feel it. Pretty expected though. Next, there is no toggle to switch from Stereo to Mono-mixed mode. If you want mono, you need to pull the input cable out half way or get a stereo to mono adapter (which I've since done). Not a big deal. There is also no visual feedback; but hey, most don't. Overall, I'm highly satisfied. A great balance of features and low cost.

So I purchased this headphone preamp quite a few years ago after using a apex head amp which was a huge upgrade from that one. after years of upgrading other components in my studio i notice this headphone pre has mediocre quality sound output compared to my apogee symphony io head pre outputs.i think i will need to purchase a quality amp next. if you are starting up your studio or what not this unit will do its job well for you. if you are a semi pro studio don't use this.

- There is no on/off switch so be careful to unplug the power cord. - I bought these for an amateur studio to split the headphone output from my recorder and let musicians could control their individual headphone volume. They do this very well but I find cords become difficult to deal with because they feed out the back of the box while the volume knobs are on the front. I would have put the headphone plugs on the front and the volume knobs on the top. - Apart from that the unit has high quality construction

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
