My Melody Maker felt like I was playing a cheese grater!
I put some Gibson Vintage Re-issue 10's on - not expecting much - but what a difference. They have a somehow 'soft' feel to them as though your playing a gauge lighter. These are my Go To strings now.

My go to strings have been Ernie Ball 10s for 30+ year and they have served me well. I have a Gibson R9 and thought I'd give the Gibson Vintage Reissue 10s a go. They really suit the guitar well. It tends to be a bit bright and the Gibson strings are a bit more mellow than the EB's. Tames a bit of the harshness in the highs. They last a long time and have a good feel to them. Highly recommended if you have a bright guitar.
