I had heard, from multiple sources, that HD-28 guitars are the choice axe for bluegrass players. After 30 years, I finally played one -- now I know why they are preferred. The tone and playability are spot on. Notes are loud and clear during rapid flatpicking, hammer-ons and, pull-offs. Bluegrass on my Taylors and Gibson J-45 fall short for this style of playing. Yet, everything that I play on those guitars, I can play equally well on the HD-28. Also, no set-up needed as it is Plek'ed! Thanks to guys at the Poco location for selling me their awesome demo! Money well spent.

This is my second Martin acoustic. I still have my previous Martin jumbo and it is still a joy to play. However this is >the guitar< used by the big names on stage and in recording. It projects well, has the sound which I have come to enjoy. It is a bit pricey, but I will tell you it is worth every penny. It is the best guitar I have ever owned and played.

I purchased my HD in 2002 from L&M Winnipeg. I had been looking at another top brand, at another store but was jacked around by the sales manager, went to L&M played the only HD they had in stock at the time and knew I had found my lifetime guitar. Now, you can pay less for something else, but you will get less, or you can pay more and get more bling but no more sound. I love the understated looks. Unfortunately, in spite of careful humidifying, my neck went wonky after about 18 months. The local Martin tech was unable to get it back to its original shape, and she sat in her case untouched for 7 years. I had other stuff to play, and was busy, so it got ignored. After 7 years I sent the guitar elsewhere, and a simple neck truss rod adjustment put her right back the way she had been. I think she stabilized in that time. I'm not saying this would happen again, but i'm just glad mine turned out OK in the end. I own a bunch of guitars and basses, and if I only had time to grab one out of a burning house, it would be this one.

This guitar is an heirloom, a friend, a discerning player's instrument and an investment. It is eye and ear candy. It's a conversation piece. If you get a "good" one, your search for the perfect acoustic guitar will be over. I bought mine in 1991. I couldn't afford it, but the human spirit is boundless. It's a slightly customized HD 28, in aesthetics only. I have had the last 25 years to try every guitar I came across, to pass my Martin to other musicians, to listen to online reviews of other wonderful instruments, and to fuss over strings and picks and capos. Meanwhile, its sound has only blossomed. Scalloped bracing gives you a head start, but time is the real tone machine. The only other acoustic I bought since was a Seagull S6 as a campfire guitar, and to enjoy a wide finger spacing. I have no interest in any other. Just buy it, and add it as a specific line item in your Will and Testament.

Own one now for the past three years. I love it. It came well set up from the factory, including the installation of a Fishman Infinity Pickup as per my request. Absolute Gem of a guitar. I can (and have) play any guitar in the entire shop, and still leave contented with the HD-28 at home. That says a lot.

I bought mine in Nashville, I had gone to the store with my sights set on a 00018 GE but after trying a whole bunch of Martin models and Gibsons I finally picked up a HD28 and was blown away. I have had it 2 years now and still love it. I have heard people complain that Martin sets the action up a little high, the retailer offered to lower it to my liking at no charge, but if they were to come from the factory with low action you would have to change the saddle to raise it...kinda makes sense to default to higher action. I gave it a 10 for value even though it cost $2.5 K because it's worth it to me, there are many very fine guitars out there for a lot less $$, but I don't think you'll find any better than a HD 28. I tried more expensive models as well but this is the model I liked best regardless of price. If you can afford it, go for it. I've been playing for 57 years, some of that time as a pro.

I have looked at this Guitar for four years before buying it a few months ago. I tried many guitars in this price range and above and kept coming back to this one. There's just something about the "Martin Tone".

I recently spent about 2 hours demo-ing every acoustic guitar I could get my hands on. I just kept coming back the Martin HD-28 for its clean, unstated looks and most of all for its amazing sound. This is by far the most expensive guitar I have ever purchased and it is worth every penny. It is just so responsive, and is MONSTER loud when you ask it to be. Amazing base and shimmering trebles, just love it as an all-around guitar. Honestly I cannot find any fault with this guitar. Perhaps the only one is a reputation for Martins to be less durable than some other makes regarding temperature and humidity changes. I'm not concerned - its a $3000 guitar with tax and its treated as such. It lives in its case, its humidified and its transported with care in the cold of winter and the heat of summer. Go on, try every guitar you can get your hands on. For me the journey ends with the HD-28 :)

Honestly, you cannot go wrong with any martin D series. Ask anyone and they will have no negative feedbacks about any D-series. Probably the boominess but really..? Joel Houston from Hillsong United is mainly using this guitar. If you are in a church band setting, this is it.

The Martin HD-28 is an amazing instrument. I've been a guitar player for over 40 years and have played hundreds of guitars in that time period. This model is the absolute best acoustic I've ever played and owned. It has thunderous bass and shimmery trebles. I can play folk, country, jazz and blues with this guitar. It's the only acoustic you'll ever need.

I bought a Gibson J45 a couple of years ago and had trouble keeping it in tune, also was not impressed with the quality of tuning equipment etc. Bought the HD-28 last April and was totally blown away with the quality of everything on the guitar, it's in a whole different league and it only gets better with time, maybe use the Gibson for slide.

I've had a number of guitars over the years including a Cort Earth 200 and a Yamaha LJ6 but always dreamed of owning a class instrument like this. Spent quite a while in the store experimenting with different makes and models and this is the one that spoke to me. So I brought it home. Beautifully classic looking instrument. Stays in tune amazingly and sings when I touch the strings. No regrets on this purchase. If I could only keep one of my guitars, this would be the one.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
