Description

With its massive sound, hands-on ease, and affordable price, the GAIA SH-01 is a high-performance value with old-school charm. The triple-stacked engine puts potent virtual analog synthesis under your fingertips, yet the control panel is so fun, friendly, and inviting, even first-timers can create great sounds. The signal flow is simple to grasp, with logically arranged knobs, sliders, and buttons. Hands-on control and fat sound make this little powerhouse a joy for music students, songwriters, session players, and live performers of all styles and skill levels.

- Huge sound with three virtual analog engines onboard, each with a dedicated oscillator, filter, amplifier, envelope, and LFO
- Layer up to five simultaneous effects, including distortion, flanger, delay, reverb, low boost, and more
- 64-voice polyphony for massive sounds without note drop-out
- Fun, hands-on control panel that's great for instant gratification, and for learning synthesis
- Lightweight, compact body with 37 full-size keys
- Runs on AC or battery power for portable convenience
- D Beam, arpeggiator, and Phrase Recorder onboard
- USB ports for saving user patches to USB flash drives, and for audio/MIDI connection to computers.

The "one knob/slider per function" is very very helpful when programming and is very inspiring. The 64 voices and layering is also very helpful. That said, it is perfect as a digital sounding modern synth. It cannot sound as present/lifelike/rich as a true analog - no digital synth can. For the money, a great digital VA with many sound possibilities including evolving pads, sound effects and keys.

I bought it but was not really happy with the sounds it made. It was OK, but I returned it before month was over, went back to my Roland SH-201 (the model previous to the SH-01). It is good for a learning synth, but the price is too high, would be great if price was around $400. Took money from this one and bought a KORG Krome.

I love my Gaia. So versatile and the easy controls allow you to design / modify the sound as you perform. I have switched to the Gaia from the Korg MS-2000B. Love the analogue sounds! Here is a tutorial video where I show some cool Gaia patches: http://geoffmobile.com/blog/roland-gaia-classic-synth-sounds-part-1-tutorial-vlog-by-geoffmobile-sept-27-2012

For a mid-range synth this is in direct competition with the Novation Ultranova. It lacks a Vocoder and a line-in, and you have to pay for the VST, but beyond that it is a very excellent performance keyboard. Great sound, plays great, the keys are very playable, and the knobs are sexy. Great practice keyboard with the ipod input feature with the 1/8 headphone input. Or use it for gigging to mix in beats/samples. Lacks an included USB cord which is a shame. Lurv me some Supersaw! Beats inferior cheap VSTs like a red-headed stepchild.
