Single-channel tube amps with Class A circuitry are for guitarists who prefer to conjure sound from the fingers and the guitar rather than switch channels. As the Holy Grail in the amplifier's pantheon, no amp sounds more direct, vivid or sensuous than Class A. H&K's Puretone therefore follows that minimalist approach. And if it feels as if three band EQ is a decadent affront, you can easily tune in tone via Growl hidden from the signal path. With its 25-watt EL34, Puretone is very loud, so we installed a power attenuator. Now you can bring down the amp's old, hauntingly beautiful sound to levels compatible with neighborly good will. But Puretone takes no prisoners: Every game error, any technical shortcoming will be punished immediately. Well, who dares to tame the beast?
