Description

1956 was a big year for the Les Paul Goldtop. It was the first year that the Les Paul wore the Tune-O-Matic bridge bridge (aka ABR-1). This bridge design represented a major advance in functionality. It anchored the strings more solidly improving sustain, had adjustable saddles for better intonation, and thumbwheels allowed it to be raised or lowered for preferred action. It was in many ways the first modern Les Paul.

Like all VOS (Vintage Original Spec) series instruments., the 1956 Les Paul Goldtop VOS is handcraftedfor comfort and playability in the Gibson Custom Shop. The construction, neck profile, hardware, and electronics are period accurate, and a special nitro-cellulose finish treatment gives it the patina of a gently-aged vintage guitar. Includes Gibson Custom Shop case and a certificate of authenticity.

What a beautiful look, feel and sound! This is my second Les Paul, my other one is a Supreme with the gold hardware. Both guitars play amazing but the sounds are so completely different with the P90's on the Gold Top ReIssue! I am so glad I made the investment.... Yes... Investment... it will not go down in value. You get what you pay for!

I bought an $850 Epiphone Goldtop with Seymour Duncan pickups, but I spent 20 minutes going back and forth between the two guitars (with more than $1500 separation in cost). I played them through a Fender Blues Junior amp and a Vox AC30. I noticed no difference for playability. The Epiphone was a "custom" model made in China (whatever that means). The Gibson did not play any better and I found the Seymour Duncans on the Epiphone were slightly smoother/creamier than the Gibson pickups. If this were my full time guitar, perhaps the Gibson would stand years of solid user better, but as an additional "sound" in my guitar arsenal, I think the Epiphone is a much better value. --downside of my 'testing' was that I wound up trading in my own Blues Junior and bought a VOX AC15!

Nothing beats this guitar for tone and playability. My best friend owned one back in 1975 and played through a Traynor tube stack. Only problem was/is that it's heavy (for sustain) and he couldn't jam sitting down, it kept sliding around.
