IN KEEPING with the spirit of Long & McQuade's impressive line of instruments, I have to say that having a very small yet surprisingly-versatile all-around electronic workstation like the Korg MicroSTATION is a dream; and so was having come across with the keyboard for the first time upon setting foot on L&M after almost a year's absence in music-making, having made the purchase from that day with a huge slice of reality. From the looks department, the instrument screams of 'home music studio' with ALMOST ALL the bells and whistles you would expect from Korg's Triton series of keyboards. BUT, upon closer inspection you'd be surprised to find out it carries the latest EDS-i synthesis format found on the heavier, more-costly M50 and the M3 Korg workstation; ALL in one literally easy-to-carry keyboard. And the surprise doesn't end there: for a mini 61-Key unit it's surprisingly responsive. Solos, backdrops, rhythms, orchestras... you name it. The keys, despite the obvious size, answer to your every touch; without the after-touch. And that is perhaps the ONLY drawback I see upon using the MicroSTATION. Having grown-up playing upright pianos way back since childhood to standard-size digital keyboards until this purchase, I have struggled - 'struggled...!' - for perhaps a month-or-so, On-Off, to get myself used with having the feel of playing either complete pieces, brief and extensive solos, or even short bursts of tunes on the 'mini-keys.' And 'that's the crux of the matter: one has to instil with oneself, and with huge patience, that playing the Korg MicroSTATION is entirely different from playing an acoustic piano or even at least a conventional 61-key portable fitted inside with small springs for after-touch; because THIS one I believe doesn't have any. Despite the keys' impressive responsiveness to touch, strength, and flexibility for which Korg is quite well-known for, the difference as per playing-feel between the MicroSTATION and perhaps almost virtually ANY other music workstation on the market today is as stark as Cole Porter's "Night And Day." In any case, all I can say is that if there's ONE very good reason for you now to buy a 54L-camping backpack -- a quite reasonable size for your Korg MicroSTATION Keyboard and all its gears, save for a kick-stand and an amp -- for all your 'strike-anywhere, any day, anyhow' music-fests, lounge gigs, dance-hall days, functions, house jams, recording sessions, concerts and mini-concerts; along with extra shirts, socks, and underwear included, GO get one. Because that's 'exactly' what I just did.
