Pork Pie has been making waves in the drum industry with their unusual, innovative products. The Pork Pie Big Black Brass Snare Drum with Tube Lugs is a good example of this, with retro-style tube lugs that traverse the depth of the body and a brass shell with a stunning, black chrome finish. Outstanding sensitivity, volume and projection.

Mrs B got me this for my birthday. Well. I bought it. She gave me some money, and we said this is what she got me for my birthday. I got it due to the amazing reviews it has here. I have far too many Ludwig, and other snares, including a black beauty. There is so much stigma around cost should equate to "better" sound. This has never been my motif and I use my ears to tell me what I like the sound of. The BOB snare is just great to my ears. For the price point it's bloody amazing. Go and buy one now and save money on higher costing products (which are there just to make money for the manufactures!). Bravo Pork Pie!

I have had this snare for many years. A Black Beauty knock off and it's outstanding. Well worth the money. When I bought it, it came with puresound snare wires. Not sure if that's still the case. They go a long way to adding body to this drum.

This is a great all-around snare. I changed both the batter and resonant heads as the stock ones it comes with are not great. Although it does not have the tonal quality of a Ludwig Black Beauty, for the price, it can't be beat! As a side note, I noticed that the batter side rim had a slight rust blemish when I unboxed the snare, rather than take it back to L & M, I e-mailed Pork Pie directly and heard back from the owner Bill almost immediately. He is sending me a new rim - very impressed with his level of professionalism!!

Bought this as a universal live snare. Black Beauty was out of my price range. Was willing to spring for the DW equivalent, but when I played them back to back, the difference was negligible...certainly not worth an additional $339. I put a new Evans head on this snare and it is truly a joy to play. Well worth the money. I will absolutely pick up one more just to have at home.

Ive been amazed by this snare since I bought it after reading so many good things about it. With 10 lugs per side it tunes up quickly and easily. It's the first snare I've owned that needed no dampening. I play it wide open and it sounds great at any volume. I originally assumed because it is a big metal snare i would have to use something to dampen the ringing. i began with an Evans G14 batter head and thought it sounded great. The more i played it in live situations the more i realized that this snare is really meant to ring ( the tone is beautiful and cuts through whatever the band is playing) . I recently went back to an Evans G1 and was amazed that it sounded even better. it lost none of the controlled snare sound but it sang even more. I love a tight batter head (399 Tunebot) for the pop and the great bounce i get from the head, however I'm going to experiment with lower tunings. This is the first snare I've owned that seems to sound great wherever you tune it. Make sure not to over tighten the snares you don't want to choke it. Great price at Long and McQuade as well. Amazing value for money when you compare it to a Ludwig Supraphonic or Black Beauty.

A great snare! Got mine 3 years ago and it has been one of my faves. A great workhorse snare that will work in many situations. A have a coated ambassador on top and a hazy ambassador snare side head and tune it medium. I did own a black beauty back in the 90s and this drum is every bit as good if not better. I suspect it would record great also. A real value for the money!

I use an Evans G14 snare head and tune it up with a Tune bot. i've been amazed at how great it sounds! It really has that Black Beauty sound and reminds me of the snare sound Eric Kretz gets with Stone Temple Pilots. On its own it's a little ringy but "live" with a band it cuts through and that ring suddenly sounds musical giving the drum a lot of character. Amazingly it retains that character at any volume. Keep the snares relatively loose, you don't want to choke this drum.

*****Great all around snare whether you are in the studio or playing Live. *****A Must have in the arsenal. If you can find one with a true shell say goodbye to every other snare you own! "A true and well tuned snare drum will produce the best snare sound". I received a Pork Pie Big black that had a very near perfect shell. Perfectly round and no warping whatsoever. Then, I changed the batter and resonant heads right away. I fitted mine with a Remo coated ambassador on top and a Remo hazy ambassador bottom. I also changed the snare wires to Pearl Ultrasound (for metal snare drums). Finally, I changed the top 2.3 mm trinple flange hoop to an S-hoop, leave the snare side batter 2.3 mm its fine. The S-hoop focuses the shell slightly while maintaining resonance and response. Also it allows for easier tuning much like a die-cast hoop. It's also heavier than triple flange and thus maintains the tuning of the drum. Do this and I guarantee you will have one rocking sweet snare that will rival any other Brass snare on the market including the Black beauty. I've owned this snare for over 4 years and I can't get enough of the sound. I haven't used another snare since I bought it. I gave Features 4.5 out of 5 because although the heads are playable they are nferior to the USA Remo's which I added right away. I also changed snare wires. (read above).

I bought this snare because I was looking for a good brass snare drum for a hiphop/groove project. The throw off is smooth, easy to use, and looks great. The tube lugs hold tuning incredibly well and give the drum a classic look. I changed the stock heads. I put an Evans EC1 Reverse Dot on the top and an Evans 300 snare side on the bottom along with some pure sound wires and made this drum sound even more amazing! Do yourself a favour, save some money by picking up the Big Black snare drum from Pork Pie Percussion and play one of the best brass snare drums. Cheers!

The Pork Pie Big Black Brass snare 14x6.5 is the nicest brass snare I've ever played. You will not believe the sound you will get from this snare, it sounds exactly like a Black Beauty at less than 1/2 the price. Yes, its a seamed shell but the weld is absolutely flawless I mean you really have to look carefully to see it and the bearing edge at the weld is unoticeable. True workhorse snare. You get chromed brass tube lugs and 2.3mm hoops. The throw off is ok but can't complain because it works perfect. You will not be dissapointed with this snare in fact you will be pleasantly surprised at what your getting for the price. It will never leave your snare stand. I've been playing for 35 years and played many drums that cost more than this one and I can honestly say that this snare is awesome. Look no further than the PP BBB 14x6.5 snare drum. 10+

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
