Question: This side desk rack seems rather large as it states the top is 29"x29" where the rack is 19" (assuming that's the width) is this correct?

I purchased this desk side rack to hold effects racks. It works great to supplement my desk and music work station. I installed a power bar, and several 19 inch shelves to hold equipment that don't have 19 inch mounting tabs. It is a great high quality unit.

This rack is built super well for what you pay! I've had it for about a month now and have no issues other than, from the factory they forgot to include the cage nuts. I thought this would be an issue getting them but I called Jeff at the Pembina store who immediately placed an order for the cage nuts and apologized about the inconvenience. Other than that the Rack is SUPER sturdy and can hold anything without fear of the rack collapsing.

It took almost 5 months to receive and the quality of it was poor. Its very large which is great, but the wood was scratched and the perforated cage on one side was welded upside down. There are no pilot holes to guide the top, and the screws actually snapped. The rack itself is fine. The inserts function just fine. The complaints in the other reviews who have issues with that, worrying about their heavy gear, clearly have no concept of physics and how it works. They function perfectly fine and will hold heavy gear. Overall pretty disappointed and received no response from L&M support about it.

TLDR; The way you connect your devices to the rack rails was poorly thought out. It doesn't hold larger/heavier units very well because it is clips that you screw into. The thing also did not come with enough clips - however they can order you the Caged-Nuts in packs of 10 for $3... but wouldn't fulfill the missing ones.
Features: This was low due to a few reasons.
The Rack Rails uses these little Caged-Nut Clips you insert into the square holes along the rack. You do not screw your equipment into the rack itself, you screw your equipment into these little clips, which then clip into the rack rails. This is problematic for heavier units that are (for example) 3U's with a bit more weight - as they will likely pull hard enough that they snap the clips and your equipment falls to the floor. Why didn't they simply just use screws?
**BE WARNED** Some of the caged nuts are either missing the nuts inside or they don't give you enough. I only received enough for half the unit to be used.
The other reason is attaching the top onto the rack. There are no markings or pilot holes to help you keep this thing centered.. you must measure yourself and hope you're ok at measuring bizarre/curved shapes. Then you have to drill your own pilot holes. Hopefully you did it right the first time to keep it centred.
Quality - This I gave a 1.5 only because the unit put together is fairly sturdy, if you don't count the crumby clip system on the rack rails. It also comes with many imperfections. I had a few bent areas, bubbling of paint, scratches in some of the paint. But the top and structure is solid. The decision to go with this clip system is atrocious and is the main issue I have with it. Also the clips really aren't that strong ... thin cheap metal, I've had 2 snap with a heavier unit in there.
Most of the points I gave this section was based on the outer structure and the top + easy to assemble.
Value: It's almost $200 CAD ... for something that can't hold larger units very well without risk of it plummeting to the floor, or the fact that if you snap them so easily.
Overall: for someone who has a few pieces and is in Audio as just a hobby with less expensive equipment or who has mainly 1U or 2U devices... you'll be fine. Just be cautious about heavier equipment and ensure they gave you enough clips - cause it may or may not fill the whole rack.

- Heavy duty metal constructed base,
- Laminate top needs to be pre drilled,
- Bolts are easy to cross thread and strip so make sure you line it up properly
- some cage nuts may not be threaded so inspect before installing

Its kind of cheap, it looks decent enough. Assembly was a pain. No pilot holes drilled in the top had to try and center it up with a tape measure on my own which was difficult as it is an odd shape. This has cage nuts not standard rack rails, the screw heads are too small to really hold the gear in place, so I had to run to fastenal to get screws with a bigger head on them. Additionally the cage nuts are not the same thread size as standard rack screws. Would be greatly improved just by providing screws with bigger heads on them.

Got mine today, was relatively easy to assemble EXCEPT...1 side panel came with the holes for the bottom brace drilled on the wrong end, so make sure you have a drill and 1/4" drill bit to make the appropriate holes. There are no pilot holes drilled in the wood top or markings where the screws should go, so you have to center the top on the frame before screwing it down, a tape measure is required to get it right. Would also recommend buying aftermarket rack screws. The ones that come with the unit aren't very long and have very small rubber washers to use with them. I found them barely big enough if the unit you're mounting has elongated holes in it. I bought Link AA67 screws and they worked perfectly.
Once the unit is together it is quite sturdy and looks very elegant, would fit in nicely in any studio.
Would have given it a 10 if not for the missing mounting and pilot holes.

Great little rack and much more aesthetically pleasing than a traditional IT server rack (and much cheaper too). I have a combination of audio and network gear on mine.
As for the cage nuts (the things that go into the square holes everyone is complaining about), this is standard on most 19 inch racks. Older style racks had threaded holes, but the problem was when they became stripped you basically lost a rack slot. With cage nuts you just pop in a new nut and all is good.

I don't get why there are clips that go into the rack instead of being able to screw the gear directly to the rack. They fall out sometimes when taking out the screws to take gear out making my gear fall to the ground, they've cut me trying to install it. Just a poor design in my opinion.

I thought that $125.00 was a lot to spend on this, but I took the plunge and bought it. It's very well made and sturdy and looks really good in my home studio. Rack equipment which is not housed well can become annoying and an interference to the creative process - this unit solves that problem. My only quibble with it is that the overhang of the wooden surface means that your rack units are in shadow, but I mean to solve this by installing a cheap counter top light from Ikea to the underside of the wood surface. Oh, and allow extra time to fit the little rack clips into the BACK of the square rack holes! There's a knack to it - that's all I can say.
All in all, highly recommended.

I purchased this Studio Side Rack as a standalone product. I did not purchase the Apex Studio desk. I am very happy with it as any comparable unit, including stereo stands from my local electronics store, was much more expensive. I highly recommend this product, it looks sharp, it cleaned up the stack of equipment I had sitting on my floor in my studio, and it is a great value. However, I do have a few suggestions that would make this product even better;
1. The frame is large enough to hold a 14 unit rack, but only a 12 unit rack is welded to it. This leaves empty space between the top of the rack and to underside of the table top. The space could be used more efficiently.
2. Apex should pre-drill pilot holes in the table top or provide a mounting template. It is up to the person assembling the rack to determine where to drill the pilot holes. It is difficult to center the table top to the rack as the table top is not square.
3. Finally, I was disappointed that the table top edge veneer molding on my unit does not meet up properly. As the unit is against a wall, I have placed the edge molding flaw to the back where it is not visible. Initially I installed the top with the long edge facing the front. I had to reverse the top to hide the flaw...
I have owned this rack for 6 weeks. I am very happy with my purchase.
