Pros: Solid built, clear mids, good for classical, soft rock music, flat EQ for song editing in DAW. 1/ IMO, This flat EQ response headphones is ideal for home music recording and editing. Flat bass, a touch up on highs, but good clarity on mids, you can hear the notes. Kind of bring all sounds to a neutral balance state. 2/ Very good for listening to classical music, vocal emphasized songs (Celine Dion, Adele), or music with attention to the mid sounds for guitars and keyboards like Pink Floyd. 3/ Looks really solid built, cord and earmuffs can detach and replace. Foldable for easy storage. 4/ Very good for listening to soft rock, ambience, yoga, and easy music before bedtime. Might make a good gift to my grandma. Cons: Flat headband and flat EQ output. Heavy, flat padded headband is not comfortable. I don't recommend for average dance music listeners, you don't dance with it. The music EQ output is flat like +1 bass-0 mid- +1 treble. But if you don't care about treble and bass, but care more about what people sing vocally then these phones can be a good choice. 1/ The headband edge is padded but flat edge (pad foam should be curved) and with its weight of 311grams can be irritating. After one song, I felt like there was stick pressed on top of my head. I didn't like it, I wore it around the back of my neck instead. 2/ Because of closed back headphones to stop noise in and out, you do feel some tightness pressure around ears.

My brother gave me a pair of these when he upgraded and i used the Shure srh440's for a couple of years and really was impressed with there longevity and sound. I just got back from the store after buying a brand new set. I could've bought any other pair but i chose these because i am so used to them.

Used to be good. Had a pair of these for over 6 years. Broke only during a car crash. Second pair I bought, as mentioned 6 years later - the right phone wouldn't connect properly with the cable. Sound distortion at times depending on how the cable flexed. And finally after a year, the stem swivel on the headphone broke. Literally within a week of the warranty seemingly expiring.

I bought a pair of SRH440s about four years ago after hearing positive things about the Shure brand. I tried them out in-store (not Long & McQuade) and they sounded great - better than any headphones I had had prior, so I bought them. I have used them extensively, but by no means have I mistreated them or subjected them to any kind of use outside of ordinary listening. Despite my attempts at treating them well, they are now broken. The left side of the overhead brace assembly where it attaches to the ear piece has cracked and the integrity of the headphones is compromised. The left earpiece will no longer stay on my ear, making the headphones virtually unusable. The right side is starting to show stress marks in the plastic, and is not far from suffering the same fate. This is such a shame, since the actual headphone components and cable are still functioning, and the sound is still just as excellent as when I bought them. I blame this structural flaw on an overuse of plastic in the design, especially on areas that receive a high degree of stress and flex. Beware of the materials used when buying headphones, and make sure that the areas that receive the most wear and stress will hold up. In this case they didn't, and now I'm on the hunt for studio headphones once again.

These are truly excellent headphones, not just for the price. I've found them to be quite comfortable to wear, and the sound is – in my opinion – really accurate and balanced across the spectrum. Compared to many other sets of headphones I've tried and/or owned, they give me the closest to what I"m actually hearing from my monitors (Yamaha H7). I've owned at various points the Audio-Technica ATH-m50x (nice, but too scooped), Audio-Technica ATH-m20 (sounds like a tin can), AKG 240 mkII (expensive garbage sound), AKG 240 studio (less expensive, same garbage sound), Audio-Technica ATH-m40x (Ok but wildly exaggerated bass). I've auditioned Sennheiser 280, 300, 380 – they all sounded super congested to me, like cheap AT headphones. These Shure's came out on top, and to me they even edge out their more expensive big brother (SHR880) – they just seem more balanced and accurate, less warm and wooly sounding. They remind me most of the m50x's with a more realistic, unscooped midrange. Like any plastic headphone I don't expect them to hold up forever, but they don't feel cheap to me. I expect an average lifespan out of them. The coiled cord feels solid and it being detachable is a nice plus. The only downside to these headphones are the wires that travel externally from the earcups to the headband. I could see them get snagged and damaged through rushed or careless use, but that's really the only downside to these. I'll look at it as a reason to take extra care with them.

I purchased these know what I was getting. a flat over the ear headphone, with great quality sound. I knew I didn't like the leather ear cups, but I bought with the intentions of purchasing the replacement pair of SRH940 ear cups from Amazon Canada.

Would highly recommend picking these up if you want the best value. I'm on my third set due to abuse/theft and if I broke my current set again I would be buying another pair the next day.

Sure there are going to be better cans out there but for the hundred bucks I paid for these ( I've had them for 6 or 7 years now), I am not they they could be beat. I certainly do not have audiophile ears but these things sound pretty good to me. I also have the Shure SE215's as well and love them. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these to anyone. Some reviews mention discomfort after long periods which I too encounter but it's usually when I am listening in excess of an hour and a half. I use my SE 215's a little more as they are in ear and I don't want to look like one of these dorky kids today who think cans look cool out in public.

I bought these just for some home mixing and mastering which they are fabulous for. However I find myself using them for everything. They do not require a dedicated amp, a 1 volt RMS source such as an iPhone has more than enough output for these cans. The sound is very balanced, tight timing and detailed sound throughout the spectrum. For general music listening a small addition of bass and treble doesn't hurt but in most conditions these bad boys need no equalization at all. The only complaint I have is that the cable design uses a shared ground return which causes significant crosstalk between L/R. However I was able to modify them in such a way to eliminate this problem. Also the headband needs to be slightly re positioned after an hour or so of use as it will cause a pressure point on the top of your head. For the price paid and the level of sound quality produced by these headphones, I am more than happy. The staff at Long & McQuade are friendly and quick and seem to care about customer satisfaction.

I like the sound of these phones - clear, present, balanced, quite a bit of gain without requiring a swanky headphone amp. But the main downside for me is in comfort. In fact, they're so uncomfortable to me that they give me a headache. The top of the headband digs into my skull, and it doesn't feel very nice. Oh, and they squeak, so it's difficult to use these while tracking. The creaky-squeaky sounds come through too loud and too clear, especially when tracking vocals. Sorry Shure, I wanted to love them...

I use these headphones mainly to track drums and guitars in the studio. Tracking with the SRH440 headphones provides several significant advantages over other designs I've used: 1. they reduce bleed from the headphones to the microphones during tracking 2. the provide hearing protection from loud sources like drums and amps 3. they offer balanced frequency response even at high volumes I like how the connecting cable can be locked into place. I never have to worry about it when getting in and around equipment in the studio. I have two recommendations for Shure to make the SRH440's even better: 1. replace the spiral cord with a straight cable in the original packaging. The extra weight of the spiral cable often pulls the headphones down on the left ear cup when tracking physically demanding instruments like drums. 2. Keep all cabling to each earpiece internal. Those little loops of cable to each earpiece are a potential accident waiting to happen! For $100, the Shure SRH440's are a strong value. While there are more accurate sounding headphones available, you have to pay hundreds of dollars more. For tracking purposes, the Shure SRH440's are hard to beat!

After years of buying headphones every month I stopped in and bought a SRH440. These are awesome headphones. I DJ in a club every weekend from Thursday to Saturday, Plus weekly on air radio and production. These are a solid and comfortable set, I wear them almost 10 hours or more a day. Like you will read below, there was a hefty amount of treble in the beginning, but after using and breaking them in, the set sounds incredible.

I bought a pair of these in january of 2012, and they've done an incredible job for the last 10 months. Best headphone purchase I've ever made. I'm certainly no audiophile, but slowly learning, so I did a lot of research before I bought these at cans in this price range, and tested different sets in store... Shure won hands down. I use them primarily for video editing and a bit of light mixing, and they've always provided clear, neutral audio, though i'll agree with another reviewer that the bass seemed to get a little richer with use. Easily worth $99.

I returned some Sennheiser's for these. Much happier. A bit trebley out of the box, but the bass in slowly increasing as they are still being broken in (only 4-5 hours on them). They sound great. Long coily cord - good playing guitar with. Replaceable leather pads (for then they start to crack). Good buy, for $100 you won't find any better.
