I've owned this, I now own an md505, as I gave this to my son to get learning, great instrument with solid tone. The satin finish is nice, which is one of the main differences between it and the md505, as well the md505 came with a hard case. With this one get yourself a nice little Yorkville case, gig bags not very good unless you are careful and have a 45%humidified room.

I picked up this mandolin last summer, and I love it. I read reviews, and watched videos before hand but didn't spend too much time playing it in the store (as I wasn't even a beginner at the time). However, after months of lessons I have to say that this is the best blind purchase I've ever made - maybe the best thing I've ever bought. Now, for someone fresh out of university $500 was a lot to spend but it was definitely worth it. I've played every mandolin I could get my hands on since I started my lessons and the 305 really stacks up. It sounds practically identical to the 505 which is the next price point above ($730). It makes so much sense to me to make this investment rather than throwing a couple hundred towards a lower end model which you won't enjoy as much, be as proud of, and have to trade up to something else when you get serious. This is an absolute delight to play; a phenomenal instrument.

The instrument is beautiful, wouldn't ask for any other in this price range. Sounds sweet and loud. The neck width may be a little to thin for some it's growing on me. I bought mine with a poor setup, check where the foot of the bridge meets the top of your mandolin for any imperfections or light passing through. Apparently that happens with this model. Over all really happy with the sound and quality of my Eastman 305 MD definately worth checking out but, if you're paying full price you'll probably want a set up and to check the contours of the top of the mandolin.
