Forget about short/medium/long scale basses- at 28.6? and with a proportionately-sized body, this deserves a separate category. These miKro's have good ?bones?. It feels more substantial than a travel bass. The hardware is decent, it's solidly constructed, and for the most part, everything works like basses that cost twice as much or more. My particular example had a nice rosewood fingerboard, and very good fretwork. The only things that betrayed the price were a couple of minor finish flaws, and a stiff volume pot- easily repaired, and probably covered under warranty. Most short-scale basses have a warm, fat tone, but this takes it to another level. It's dark, as though the tone control is always backed off a bit. This is a baked-in physical characteristic caused by the sub-short scale length and low string tension- the pickups are fairly bright, and it already has 500K pots. It's up to you whether this is a plus or minus, but in my case, I wanted more clarity and definition, which is one of the reasons I ended up returning it. The other factor that may make or break your feelings about the GSRM20, is the handling. For most people, this would be another plus- Weight is in the low 6lb range, the body is smaller than most electric guitars, everything is close at hand, and you?d have to be very clumsy indeed to knock it into a mic stand.. It's a great couch or travel bass, and if you like to jump around on stage, it's even better than a Hofner. Also, while the neck shape gives it a chunky feel, at 38mm the nut is as narrow as any Jazz bass. Combined with the guitar-like fret spacing, fast riffing and large intervals are a breeze. The downside for me at well over six foot and 220lb, is that it felt awkward and cramped. I'm still a miKro owner, but I traded up to the 5-string version. It's also under 7 lb and fits in a guitar bag, but the wider, flatter neck carve and 45mm nut width make it feel more ?grown up?, like playing a full sized bass with a capo. Plus the 5th string gives me a better place to rest my right thumb, and there's more room to slap, thanks to the JJ pickup configuration.

First off I am a guitar player. I have electric guitars bit usually play 6 string acoustics. This is my first bass guitar. I am no spring chicken anymore. This little Ibanez made sense to ME because: 1. Its inexpensive at $299 2. Its small, shorter than my strat. Space is limited. 3. I dont need another case to store. An electric guitar gig bag works fine. 4. Its light. At 6.2 lbs it is than my strat at 8 lbs, my les paul makes it feel like a toy (which it isnt). It is WAY easier to tolerate on a strap. I can wear this bass all night. 5. It sounds awesome out of the box. I like both pickups full up as well as the tone. 6 Good hardware. Everything works fine. 7. Though I am 6 feet tall I look 8 feet tall holding it ;-) 8. The shorter scale length makes it so much easier to play. At my age my fingers dont want to contort to the fret span of a big bass. The distance between frets is closer to a guitar and easily adapted to. 9. Good setup out of the box. If it wasn't its easy as any other bass to set string/pickup height, intonation and neck curvature. 10. I like the feel of the neck. Doesnt feel like a 2x4 in my hand like a big 5 string does. I adapted from a guitar to a bass in a matter of minutes, not days, weeks or months. 11. Has bridge and neck pickups. They are passive which I prefer for simplicity. If you think short scale basses are for kids you should reevaluate your biases and think more openly. This bass sounds better than most 34"+ scale length tanks. It would be great for smaller or younger people but the sound is very very big. It rocks. What more could anyone want? Only complaint is a minor paint flaw on the front. A small fisheye. Other than that the fit and finish is great. Very nicely assembled and finished. Massive value for cost/performance and, if it matters, looks cool.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
