The ZOOM UAC-2 USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Audio Converter for Mac and PC

The UAC-2 from Zoom is a 2x2 USB 3.0 audio interface that offers near zero latency and up to 24-bit/192 kHz resolution. The compact and robust housing makes the interface perfect for studio and field recording of microphones and instruments, and with its dedicated MIDI input and output connectors, it can even serve as a stable MIDI interface. Plug in any microphone, line-level device, or instrument and use the UAC-2 for onstage playback, recording to a DAW, or enjoyment of high-res audio in your home or office. You can also use it for fast, low-latency podcasting, gaming, and other live streaming applications.

USB 3.0 SuperSpeed

The USB 3.0 SuperSpeed transfer protocol supported by the UAC-2 is ten times faster than USB 2.0 and six times faster than FireWire 800. The result? Low-latency (2.2ms roundtrip @ 96 kHz/32 samples) for improved performance from your DAW software, and a stable data stream that is unaffected by computer jitter (slight variations in timing), so there's no need to connect an external master clock source.

Zoom have a solid reputation for their field recorders. I have an H5 that has been kicking around for years! I can't say the same about the UAC-2. Great features but now warranty replacement has broken down too. Both devices, the original device and the warranty replacement, broke down in under a year of light use. If you are keen on buying this, I recommend the extended warranty from L&M.

I have been using Focusrite for many years now; I only need a compact interface for quality audio playback and single track capture. I upgraded to this unit mainly because I wanted something with good latency and midi I/O. As soon as I got the UAC through its paces, I could tell immediately that this is a noticeable upgrade to the Focusrite. Not only does the UAC a more solid better built unit, its smaller, includes both midi and switchable class compliance. More importantly, the preamps have WAY more head room (one thing I hated about the Scarlett) and the mains are WAY louder and everything is cleaner/quieter with a bit more depth and detail going in and out. Easily worth the extra cost over similar units IMO. I haven't experienced any issues with the unit and performing all my normal tasks of recording, monitoring, controlling etc. are simply a better experience. NOTE: I did take the advice from ZOOM (and others) and install the latest drivers before plugging the UAC into either my matchbook or iMac and it has performed flawlessly - so, not quite as plug n/ play as the Scarlett but still much better IMO.

I own this interface and have used it extensively for on-location recording. To me it is important to operate hardware that is well built. This interface is built very well indeed, it is elegantly compact and sturdy. The preamps are very good and fairly quiet. The tone is clear and clean. Many paople say 'crisp' - agreed. Low, low latency. I do not care much for the software, I do not really use it, but I can see its usefulness under various circumstances. These are the positives. The negatives? Well... Drivers of course. Yes, after a few initial hitches the interface now works smootly with my upgraded 2012 MacBook Pro (2.3 GHz i7 quad core, 16 GB memory, 2TB SSD) running at this writing MacOS X 10.14, but I could not make it work with my Lenovo laptop (Windows 10) - Windows does not recognise it. To say that the drivers are "finicky" is to understate things gravely. This is why the unit gets only four stars under "Quality". If you are not in luck, trying to make it work will drive you nuts. Apparently it can be done on Windows too - but be patient.

Ive heard quite alot of people say good things about this, and I bought it based on specs and was very exited! Its funny because one of the reviews says that with PC it worked for him and with Mac it didnt, well for me I was running a PC with windows 7 and it was a nightmare I tried to deal with for almost 2 years. Clicking, popping, dropouts, restarting countless times to get the pc to notice it, re-installing the drivers and I couldnt get the clicking and popping steady until I got over 456 sample rate when I knew I should be able to run much lower on an I5 8gb SS drive. It wasnt the end of the world with direct monitoring but If I wanted to monitor with any effects, plugins, reverb etc, it was not even possible. Zoom was useless, all they could say was did you re-install the drivers, and did you try a different usb cable. And trust me when I tried everything! Im now running a USB 2.0 Roland Octa-Capture until I can upgrade and its been so nice, especially coming from the zoom. no dropouts, no clicking or popping and I can run as low as 128 samples and its very stable , and rock stable at 256 samples. Anyway, I think you may have better luck with windows 10, and spec wise this should be a great unit for the money, but thats if they fixed driver issues or if it works with your pc. If you want one Id say go for it, just be ready to return it within the warranty period if it doesnt work out. Oh The headphone amp in it was awsome, that was my favorite thing about it, much better than the Octa-Capture.

This interface has done me good for as long as its been functioning, on my windows PC it sounded great and performed even better, however on my macbook, this thing was incredibly devastating. Restarting the machine to make the computer notice it, long crackles and pops during playback, very arrogant errors. I've tried updating the drivers, the firmware and have tried just about every setting. So far, the company itself provided next to no support whatsoever, asides from something along the lines of "oh well too bad". Great product when it works, but they really dont have their drivers up to par which makes this "too good to be true" interface truly too good to be true.

This has been an awesome little interface, it just works, and the sound is unbeleavable compared to others in this price range. I own the Ua-8 also and it is just great. i did find the Hi-Z feature fairly bright sounding on the UA-2 comapared to the Ua-8, but it could be that the USB power on the Ua-2 might be affecting the sound on Hi-z mode. Other than that they sound exactly the same. i will be purchasing a power adapter for the Ua-2 to see if that makes a difference when in Hi-z mode. The Ua-8 doesn't really change in sound when switching between hi-z and normal signal, just the gain changes of course. These interfaces are very warm sounding and more natural and pleasing to the ear. All my other interfaces sound way more bright, kinda like the UA-2 unit in HI-z mode. I record my electric guitar through the UA-2 with Hi-z mode in the off position, i then put the low cut on through the software mixer, i then put a touch more gain than the hi -z mode.... Sounds awesome....Forget all those cheep 2 channels that out there including Focusrite, i've tryed them.. They don't sound like the Zooms...It's the hi end Burr Brown convertors i'm guessing. It's not that the other cheeper ones don't work or sound good, but the zooms are in another league in sound for just a bit more money. I would like to compare it to higher end units like motu or RME. No dought they probably have better gain pots and better build quality, but these zooms are not bad, the housing is all metal and if your not too rammy with it the volume pots will last. There is howerever some 1/4" line cables that are harder to push into the line in insert. slight difference in the tip of the cable end. Just hold the back of the unit and push the cable in a little harder and it will go right in. Great unit, i'am very happy with both my units and i can use them vertually on any computer with super low latency.

I use the UAC-2 with my 2011 Macbook Pro, using USB2 and it works great. Macs don't usually need to install any drivers, but the "UAC-2 Driver" is needed to access the virtual mixer. The manual understates this. The manual suggests using the UAC-2 with the Class Compliance switch off, but I find it is most stable with it switched on (uses the native Mac drivers.) Generally very stable. Super low noise pres, and super low noise outs. I use it to capture location sound on video shoots, and for monitoring at my desk. The big volume dial is a plus.

I purchased this unit for use with Pc laptops...because most PC laptops are USB these days.... However I find myself using it with my IMac in my studio when i'm just doing single tracking more and more these days because of it's quality sound and preamps. I do find the preamps a bit darker sounding than my other interfaces Mackie 400F and my Presonus Project Studio, when i'm doing electric guitar. But I found using the low cut feature with the mixer software, gives me more room for the guitar to cut through the mix. Depends what guitar your using of course. Les Pauls sound a bit muddy unless you use the low cut. Of course EQing within your daw is something you do also, but it's a great starting point. The headphone output is a bit weak with certain headphones, but still does the job. The 1/4" jack inputs are a bit hard to insert a cable, but just hold the back of the unit while inserting a guitar cable and you'll be fine. The latency and stability is second to none. The sound quality is the best I have heard for the price range I will be replacing my Presonus and Mackie firewire units with the zoom 8 channel USB because of it's sound and the latency is far more stable and able to go lower latency without a problem. Get one you won't regret it, these things have Burr Brown converters and that is what makes the difference from other cheaper interfaces.
