USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Audio Converter for Mac and PC

The UAC-8 from Zoom is an 18x20 USB 3.0 audio interface that offers near zero latency and up to 24-bit/192 kHz resolution. The robust housing makes the interface perfect for studio and field recording of microphones and instruments, for onstage playback and audio streaming, and with its dedicated MIDI input and output connectors, it can even serve as a stable MIDI interface.

The UAC-8 provides a wide variety of both analog and digital connectors. 8 front panel combo XLR/TRS inputs accept mic- and line-level signals, and you can even plug instruments directly into Inputs 1 and 2. Dedicated input gain controls and Clip LEDs make it easy to set optimum input levels, and a Phantom Power switch enables the use of condenser microphones.

OUTPUTS
The UAC-8 has dual balanced analog TRS output jacks for connection to monitors, and there are also 8 discrete balanced TRS analog line outputs for multichannel monitoring or connection to external effects devices. A large front-panel Output knob offers fast control over output level, and there are two independent " stereo headphone jacks, each with its own dedicated volume control, for private monitoring.

DIGITAL I/O
8 ADAT and stereo S/PDIF digital inputs/outputs allow for the connection of up to 10 external channels, and built-in Word Clock enables easy integration into any system. In addition, MIDI In and Out is provided to allow interfacing with devices such as electronic keyboards and drum machines.

USB 3.0 SUPERSPEED
The USB 3.0 SuperSpeed transfer protocol used by the UAC-8, with a speed of 2.0 ms roundtrip @ 96 kHz / 32 samples, is ten times faster than USB 2.0 and six times faster than FireWire 800. That not only ensures low latency, it provides a data stream that's unaffected by computer jitter (slight variations in timing), so there's no need to connect an external master clock source.

I rented this for 1 week for a small project. A few weird things about it. It's a rack mount unit but they put the power switch on the back. Seriously? Also the main volume knob has fine grooves in it making it very slippery to the fingers. It's very difficult to turn and when you turn it all the way up or all the way down, your fingers continue to slide over the know making it seem like you're still turning it. Again a very strange design. If I owned this unit I would put a different knob on it. It would be nice if it had a mix knob between input and output. For the money there are better units out there. In terms if it's core functionality, it does was a good AI should do, so no complaints there.

Bought this a year ago to pair up with a new iMac that had no firewire connection to support my previous Focusrite interface. Fairly easy install of drivers and the MixEFX mixer software. Added a Behringer ADA800 ADAT converter, extending to 18 tracks, and that was easy setup as well. I found it to be as fast as my old firewire interface, maybe even a bit more so, and very low latency on my iMac. I kind of agree with what one other has said about it sounding like tape. Not quite, but close enough for my liking, and helped along if using the saturation features of Harrison Mixbus. I do my main trucking in Reason 10 and port stems over to Mixbus and always enjoy listening to playback. Dual headphone outputs, each with their own controls are very handy, and more than enough volume. For the price, it fares relatively well against higher costing units. The FX are okay for the purpose intended, not terribly exceptional, but adequate for monitoring with fx. I suppose that, if you were to spend $2000 to $3000, you'd likely get something even more exceptional, but in it's price range, I'm not sure you can find better. Again, I like the warmth of it's sound, not cold or brittle/harsh. Bottom line...better than I expected. Don't know about others, but for merit has worked fine from initial installation til now, no issues. I would recommend it!

Purchased the unit, only used it sparingly, and later found one of inputs "dead". The unit was used in standalone mode via ADAT with an RME HDSP 9652. The folks at ZOOM had no idea how to assist me with this setup - so I wrote an configuration sheet myself. PS: The UAC-8 does not use BurrBrown converters on the input but does use AKM AK5388 converters.

Anyone looking in this price range should be looking at this unit....The Burr Brown convertors is what makes it sound so great...Anyone hooking up.Electric guitar straight into this thing with good guitar software won't beleave the sound. The mic preamps are outstanding also. I've used Presonus and Mackie and Tascam all in this price range and even though they all sounded good and had suttle differences in sound. The one thing i really notice was the signal sounded way warmer and more pleasant with the Zoom unit. The other units sounded clean and brite, which may be good for some, but i found the other units more brittle sounding or cold. This sounds more tape like beleave it or not....without the hiss....lol. Try one and you'll love it. The latency is outstanding...even better than my firewire units and more stabble.

2.2 ms latency at 256 buffer size on Reaper daw. Greats sound at 192 kHz. Only problem was I hooked it up to usb 3.1 port at first, it needs usb 3.0. Good thing my new computer had both usb ports. Wish it had mono out with left and right mains so sub would react with main volume knob. I send sub out on 3/4 and just have to adjust sub volume in "Mixefx"
