I'll start by saying I had never even considered an Explorer before, until I saw an Epiphone Explorer in Korina wood, natural stain with gold hardware at the north London store. The guitar really caught my eye and was surprisingly light and comfortable to play! I couldn't get the thing off my mind but I wanted the real deal -- a Gibson. I had to go to the South London store to try one out. I had high expectations but when I got there I was appalled by the cosmetic flaws and poor quality control on that specific guitar. The pickup baseplate was not up against the end of the fretboard like it's supposed to be and the unfinished wood and glue in the 1/4" gap was visible. Also there was a small dent/scrape on the front of the guitar and an ugly knot in the wood on the front of the guitar. The guitar was also filthy and covered in dust - which is the store's fault as all their guitars seemed to be like this. However, the guitar played great and was otherwise fantastic and I wanted one. So I took a chance and ordered the same guitar online. When it came I was relieved to see there were no flaws and the guitar was MINT (not having sat on display for over a year being demo'ed). I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER WITH THIS GUITAR! I am so glad I didn't get the one in the store, tempted as I was -- if I'm going to spend that much on a guitar it better be perfect! The one I got is! Also, it doesn't say anywhere in the description but this guitar comes with a GORGEOUS brown hardcase with red velvet interior and even the case took my breath away when I saw it. That explains some of the price difference between this guitar and the ebony/cherry version which only comes with a soft case. All in all, guitar sounds amazing and is my new favourite.

Bought one of these reissues a month ago and I'm more than happy with it. I had a '76 Ibanez Destroyer (which was the Gibson counterpart at the time) and had it for over 30 years before reluctantly selling it. This 2016 reissue is as close to that guitar as I've found in any Explorer and I have two others to compare it to. Slim, fast neck, fantastic pickups, and has that traditional 'Gibson' sound, especially for hard rock and metal. The cut on the neck also allows for easy reach and bends on the 22nd fret, unlike my Les Pauls. The only downside that makes me rate it lower than a 5 are the usual minor cosmetic Gibson QC issues and the fact that the pricepoint is much higher than recent Explorers. IMO Gibson in general should not be setting MSRP's as high as they do for the end product, but being able to finally buy a brand new Explorer with the slim neck and in a natural finish was worth spending the extra dollars. As far as playability and sound I'm extremely happy with it.
