I've had this for a while now. I love the '70s vibe this SG has. It's identical to some '73 and '74 SGs I've seen for tons of money in vintage shops. The mini-humbuckers are the same as the ones that go in Gibson firebirds. They're like P90s in output and articulation, but are quiet like humbuckers. I find the tighter low end they produce to be great for heavier music. I keep my SG special in drop C. Overall craftsmanship is great, too. I found no flaws and it's very comfortable to play.

One of only 6 remaining in Ontario came home w me today. A real player's guitar w the stripped down look, gunslinger pickguard and those mini pups! saw a pic of a '74 SG Standard and this Special looks exact. I would describe the tone as somewhere between a Strat and Les Paul w lots of useful sounds. Worked a deal for a hardshell case so I got everything I wanted. Thanks L&M St Catharines!

I've had this guitar for a couple months now and love it. Tone is excellent and focused, with the mini pups being less muddy than some full sized humbuckers you might be familiar with. After the free setup at L&M, it plays perfect with no tuning issues. Wood grain is more subtle that some pictures available but the satin finish is understated, and feels very comfortable. Different feel and sound than my SG standard but overall great cleans and over driven sounds. Excellent guitar for the money.

This is a wonderful guitar. Arrived the day after L&M shipped it. It came as a one piece body looking much as advertised with slightly less contrast in the wood grain. It's got a nice, natural rustic look and feel. I love the satin finish. I'm used to seeing white trim on the side of the fret board on a gibson, but in fact I really like the look of the rosewood sides as it adds to the nature boy feel. I don't like to see the fret anchors on the side, but there they are. The fret board is incredible. It's flawless. I really like the medium frets on this. All 24 of them! I like this 24 fret layout much more than the plastic covered end of neck gap in other SG models. It looks very clean this way. Perfect cut on the nut. No adjustment required. I had to tweak intonation as expected. No truss rod tweaks. It's perfect with NYXL 10s. The neck is great. Nice and thin for a gibson, but not a butter knife. The satin finish on the back of the neck is really nice. With a gloss gibson you sometimes have to wait years for the neck finish to feel good, but this satin finish glides great even while I can still smell the finish drying. You can feel the wood grain in the back of the neck. It's a great neck finish, imo. Tunners are gibson deluxe. They don't lock, but they work well and look good. Better than the grovers you tend to see on specials. The one visual miscue, imo, is the head stock should have been gloss instead of flat. If I could have one thing then I would wish for the Gibson logo to be an actual tradition inlay instead of cheap looking epi style paint. My only tears : The holly/pineapple thing is placed about 1/8 inch left of center. I don't understand how this can happen, but there it is. If my OCD were one degree higher I would send it back, but in fact I love it too much to replace it. I own a gibson les paul special from 20 years ago and I expect that specials are made by the less experienced staff and come with a few hammer and chisel marks, I don't mind some character, but how can you screw up the holly, the cherry on the top? Inside is a card that says - We sweat the details and a check list of items. I think they need to add "Is the holly in the center?" to the check list. How does it sound? It sounds really good! I've never had mini buckers. I know p90s and 490s well and p90s are my usual choice. These mini buckers are not really like either. They sound very focused. They don't have a lot of low end and they don't have a lot of high end. They are honky, aggressive and hot. It doesn't sound like boosted mids, more like lowered bass and trebs. They sound more usable than full size buckers unless you are glued to the cliche high gain sound. I find a wide range of sound with the guitar volume. Full volume is like someone stepped on an OD pedal compared to a p90. When you roll off the volume the fuzzy edges go away and the brightness remains. Gets funky with the volume half way. I thought I might swap out the mini's for p90s, same hole in the guitar, but in fact I am loving the mini's more and more to the point where p90s are starting to sound a little off to me. The natural sound of the guitar is loud and bright. The wood sounds brighter than the pickup output. It's acoustically louder than my les paul which was my previously loudest guitar! The pots and input jack are on a printed circuit board. A one piece drop in unit. The toggle switch is stand alone. All pickups connect to the board with plastic ends. The capacitor is part of the board. I don't love the pots. They function, but they don't feel like the usual quality pot you might expect. Everything is so clean there that it will probably function for a million years, but I think I might replace them to allow me to fool around with wiring layouts. Some other things! It comes with a pickup selector washer thing that you can put on yourself. Gibson is shipping 2018s with a new soft case. This case has a lot more protection than the older black triangle bag soft case. It has a nice furry inside, but a kind of cheapy looking fake brown leather exterior. I prefer the older clean black triangle bag. Overall I am blown away by this guitar. I can't stop playing it. I can play it for hours and hours. It's super comfortable to hold and super comfortable to fret and pick. It's got a traditional, but unique, sound and look. Love it.

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
