Mini CMD121 - 1x12 Combo Amp

Buy Online

The Mini is our smallest 1x12 combo for acoustic or electric bass, mostly recommended for smaller clubs, studios and rehearsal use. Jazz and acoustic players will especially enjoy the onboard VLE and VPF filters, which help give the Mini 121 combo a warm and natural sound. Don't be deceived by its size-- the combo may be mini, but the sound is huge!

This review is a supplement to my previous review of this amp, and is intended as a performance guide. This amp by itself is quite adequate for small and medium size venues. For large venues and for playing outdoors, I would recommend using it with an extension speaker cabinet (cab). By itself, the Markbass combo amp delivers 300 W; with an extension cab, 500 W. The Markbass New York 121 (12") or New York 151 (15") extension cabs are popular choices. I found the single internal 12" speaker of the Markbass combo amp to be a bit "lite" by itself, as I am accustomed to the sound of a 15" speaker for bass. But when coupled to a 12" or 15" extension cab, this combination is very adequate. Two 12" speakers (combo and extension cab) move more air than a single 15" speaker. The combination of a 12" and a 15" speaker is ideal, as a 12" speaker has better mid-range frequency response than a 15" speaker, and the latter has better low-frequency response than a 12" speaker. So this combination delivers good low- and mid-frequency response. One time I heard an awesome bassist in a rock trio using the Markbass combo amp and a 15" Gallien Krueger extension cab, which is more compact than a New York 151 cab. It was really thumping! Long and McQuade carries both Markbass and Gallien Krueger products. I hope my comments will assist you in making an appropriate combo amp/extension cab choice.

I purchased this amp because I wanted a lightweight, premium-quality bass combo amp capable of driving an extension speaker. I have used it twice in an outdoor gig in a four-piece country band with no drummer. The amp was barely adequate. The volume and low frequency response is limited by the internal 12" speaker. I have since purchased a Markbass New York 121 cabinet to use with it, which rounds out the sound. While the CMD 121P is a very good amp, there are other amps available from Long and McQuade that are better value for money. One of these is the Traynor SB115 Small Block amp, which I also own. While it has less power than the CMD 121P (200W vs 300W), the SB115 has a 15" speaker with better low-frequency response. However, it is a stand-alone amp and cannot be used with an extension speaker.

After throwing my back out about a dozen times lugging my Ampeg 4x10 cab and SVT 3 Pro head in a road case, I finally made the leap to this wonderful little amp. Tons of power, great tone and a few effect knobs to fool around with. Never going to gig with the Ampeg again. I bought the Mark Bass NY 121 speaker to stack under this, mostly as it looks cooler on stage, as the amp alone is plenty powerful especially if you are lined out to the PA. Nice line out control on the control panel also. Extremely happy with the new setup.

It's very light weight and can produce a large amount of sound for 300w. You can have your bass in one hand and the amp in the other hand. It's great for gigs and even for practising. Awesome for starters and professionals.

I bought this for my daughter who has been playing locally, my being a parent, I worried about her lifting the heavy amp she had and the fact that she had to make two trip from the gig to the car. This amp is approx. 29lbs and plenty of power and tones. we are both extremely satisfied. WE RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.

I have owned this for about a year and usually tag on my Markbass NY 12" cabinet, which really adds sound quality and fullness. Always performs well, even in a fairly large room. Small size and weight makes it ideal.

I had my Markbass Mini CMD 121P for a year. Suddenly, no power and busted fused. It's a good thing I have Long & McQuade extended warranty and it took them 1 1/2 month to get it fixed. I hope it will last long. I also have a SWR Workingman's 15 combo amp + 2 X10 extension speakers and it lasted me for 14 years with no technical problems.

- the weight and size of this amp makes it ideal to travel from gig to gig. - the sound that comes out is heavy enough for a regular bar or small hall (i play mostly rock n' roll) - the carpeting cover is no good if you have cats =S - the EQs are basic but effective (the peizo tweeter is kinda weird sounding if you over EQ the highs) - solid build quality and industrial looks - a little bit expensive but worth it - direct out can still be EQed (which is nice) - Comments: i play regularly enough in different environments and i must say that this amp delivers 100% every time - it's very adaptable and reliable.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
