Anthony Merkel (Tuba, Trumpet, Trombone) Registration Request

Anthony Merkel is a student at the University of Regina, currently working on his Bachelor of Music in Tuba Performance. He started playing tuba at the age of 12, and has enjoyed participating in both community and university ensembles locally while also taking part in educational tuba institutes with top teachers of the continent and honor groups around the country. His main interests are symphonic tuba, modern solos, discovering effective fundamental routines, and occasionally jazz performance on both trombone and tuba. Aside from tuba, he also has a wide range of musical experiences, including regularly singing in RSO choral concerts, achieving his Grade 9 RCM certificate in Piano, travelling the states in a barbershop chorus, and working at the university as an assistant marker for Theory I-IV. Ellen began her musical training studying classical violin. She has been a teacher at Long & McQuade’s Lesson Centre since 2008. As an accomplished musician, she is proficient with both the violin and cello. She specializes in group lessons and teaching children under the age of ten, but welcomes students of all ages and levels of experience. Ellen also has experience teaching students with learning disabilities. Her lessons involve a mixture of all styles of music; including the Suzuki method, Royal Conservatory of Music repertoire, and various popular/contemporary fiddling styles. Matt started playing the guitar at a very young age and has never looked back. Through many years of lessons from a number of different instructors, Matt has developed his skills in a variety of genres including: jazz, rock, classical, funk, and reggae to name a few.
At the age of 17, Matt began developing his recording skills, and experienced his first tour. Through his university years, where he obtained his BA/Psci, Matt continued to remain actively involved in music where he joined the University of Regina jazz band and learned more about jazz, improvisation, and arranging. Following this, Matt founded the band The Nancy Ray-Guns, and they released two well received albums: All Those Years of Heart and Homestead. Matt then continued to develop his skills and took occasional lessons from Capilano Jazz College teacher Bill Coon. Also during this time, he began composing and designing audio for mobile games, including making music and sounds for 17 games with Vancouver and Ottawa based Magmic Games. Currently, Matt plays guitar for Robot Hive and has been focusing on his own album Moon Reflected in Water.
