I've owned this for over a year. I play it through two 1x12 cabs with v30s. I played this for a year without even using the presets and now that I use the presets, I'm amazed at the variety of tones here. The clean and crunch channels can sound fantastic. I use the side feature generously to get tube like saturation. I owned the super crush 100 and I still preferred the black Spirit. I run an EQ pedal to tweak the tone on occasion but still sounds pretty great without it. The ultra Channel can sound overly scooped unless you're really willing spend time tweaking it to a usable tone. Not sure why these don't get more love online.

Funny story. Went to L&M to pick up a nut for my Les Paul and ended up buying this head and the Tubemeister 112 single 12inch cabinet. This thing is awesome. So many cool features and not gimmicky. The app for the iPad is amazing and been doing some home recording with the red box on the back and WOW is really all I can say. I love this set up and I will have it for a very long time. The MKIII pedal should be here in a few days and I'm excited to be able to access the 128 bank of saved sounds on the fky as well as the 4 channels. You get what you pay for and won't be disappointed.

I had no intention on buying a new amp at all, then I discovered this thing. The fact it has 4 channels is one thing, the fact it has built-in effects is another. Not to mention the boost function, the app, and the footswitch. It also takes my pedalboard pretty well. I tried the GrandMeister 40 and felt that the Black Spirit 200 sounds better, especially on the Ultra channel. This amp does everything for any guitar playing style and well worth a try for the price.

Went to the store to try the Tubemeister 40 Delux. Tried both amps and I was impressed with the BS. The combination of the sag, presence gain and resonance dial in a really good tone incredibly close to tubes and you can tweak it more than in the TM. At home I tried with my Strat and with my Godin on which I have HBs. The amp really brings out the best of each guitar. The cleans on the strat are very clear and punchy. With the HBs the crunch comes in a lot earlier and it really brings up the low and mid tones. Have not tried much the effects and mainly use the clean and crunch channels but I am very happy with the amp.

I've always been a tube amp guy, so I approached this one with a bit of apprehension. But I wanted something a bit more reliable as a backup if m grandmeister tubes burn out. But my grandmeister has been shelved for the last 4 months and the black spirit has been on my cab. It sounds closer to a tube amp than any modeller (or sim plugin) I've come across. The gain sounds awesome, the cleans are sparkling, and the onboard effects sound just as good, if not better than most boutique pedals. On top of that, with the option to switch from 2-20-200w, it's perfect for gigging, studio, and bedroom playing. My only complaint is overall the gain channels are very dark in tone, you have to really push the mids/presence/or treble to get a lot of bite out of it, but that being said, the low end that this thing produces is very tight and sounds great.

I had more time to dig into the Black Spirit and I have to admit that it covers a wider range, and control of the range of rock tones then I first had thought. The effects and the control of the effects are good enough to cover most situations albeit there could be more made available to give us foot switch control of the effects as far as switching them in and out. This would take an improvement on the FM432. But, overall, a great amp.

The Cleans are great and when over driven sound like 60's overdrive which is pretty decent. But I find the sound either too dry or over the top wet with effects and not quite natural. But a lot closer than any Line 6 or Boss pedal board gimmick. The Noise gate is hit and miss on higher gain channels and the ultra I simply had not much use for . The Lead channel does what it implies. The effects are fair but there are far better available in the digital boards albeit I cant stand them either. But it is still missing something in the sound, cant put my finger on it. But it is a lot better than any modelling amp or multi effects pedal. Hughes and Kettner needs to improve on the FM432 as well. a display to select from a list of presets and a few scribble strips and PC software would do a lot for this package.

Weather or not it truly emulates tubes is subjective and a debate on its own but my opinion is that it's very convincing being solid state. This is an amazingly slick and inspiring piece of gear. It sounds great and has features galore. Ultra light, compact and no tubes to mess with. I'm truly impressed! There is no local L&M here in Thunder Bay so I opted to order online. As usual they delivered promptly and brand new/ sealed. Very reliable! THANK YOU!

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
