While this pedal isn't my favorite, its the most versatile. It works pretty well from a medium overdrive up to high gain. With the 3 band EQ you can get it to stack however you want with other pedals. Too much gain and bass can make it sound a bit muddy for complex chords, but with the bass rolled back a bit, the treble up, and the gain kept down below 12:00 it will handle punk/ grunge/ rock tones nicely. If I want more gain I use a Tube Screamer or a booster to push it up to metal territory. Only complaint is it has so much output that matching volumes can be touchy.

There is a reason a certain rodent moniker pedal is still around after all these years. It does one thing and it does it exceedingly well The same is true for the MXR M-75 except this pedal offers much more tonal variation. The three-way EQ is highly effective. The sound is pure and simple old school distortion and that's a beautiful thing. It is surprisingly difficult to find an old school straight ahead distortion pedal these days and I went through a bunch of pretenders in my search. The only reason I didn't get around to this MXR sooner is also the reason I deducted half a point from its overall rating: its name. Look MXR, I am not a 12 years old wannabe with a perpetual pout (no offense to 12 year old pouters) and I don't wear black leather pants as a rule, so please cut it out with your juvenile naming scheme.

I’ve played many distortion pedals and this one is the most versatile. The 3-band eq is indispensable. Adding mids and less gain gives a nice classic od sound. It even does a clean boost and of course it gets into hard rock distortion territory. If you play different genres, different amps, different guitars, this plays well with most of them, if not all of them.

I've owned a lot of pedals over the years... too many that did the same thing.... i keep trying new builds hoping to find the "one", rarely getting impressed beyond a mild " that's kinda cool" After an hour of getting nothing but useable sounds with the Super Badass, i realized one thing was clear. I need to buy a few more for spares... just in case... good job MXR! Blown away....

When I first ran my Epi Les Paul through the Super Badass into the dirty channel of my 90's solid state Princeton Chorus I was disappointed to say the least. Even with the amp's gain all the way off, the pedal was muddy and flacid. I briefly thought of returning it, until I figured I'd run it through the amp's clean channel. Wow, what a difference! I'm not sure about the claims for modern metal sounds (not my deal anyway), but it certainly does everything else..... And does it amazingly well. The sound is very tunable, and gives tube-like organic warmth through my solid-state amp. Like a good tube amp, the Super Badass gives decent pick responsiveness, especially with the guitar volume rolled back. Pick softly, and there's a clean overdrive sound.... Play more aggressively at the same volume, and the SBA barks it out! Love the versatility! Only peev is the power jack located on the right side, far too close to the input jack for me.

Probably the best distortion I've ever heard. Especially for the money! Been on the chase to add a second drive/distortion pedal on my board for a year, and I believe that I may have found it. It's on the board with a TS9 playing a strat through a deluxe reverb. All tube. Tried an OCD, RAT as well going with the 2 TS9 set-up....The MXR Superbadass allows for loads of a volume push, but the tone is buttery smooth. I couldn't contain a tinny almost digital sound off of the OCD and RAT. the 2xTS9 was close, but the MXR Superbadass distortion is fantastic. If you're trying the OCD - Test this baby. Very Nice....Read all the reviews out there. It was a big help

I'm "super" impressed by this "badass" pedal!!! Very good gain on tap to get the meat and potatoes of your sound. I nail Van Halen tones with ease, thanks to the musical way this pedal works with your fingers and guitar. Cleans up when you roll off the volume, and growls when you turn it up. The eq section is very dynamic and has a wide range of options. The best distortion pedal I've ever used!!! Going to buy another one as a backup..., just in case.

This thing emulates marshall or even heavier metal tones perfectly. I play it through a vox ac15 and on my friends solid state but it sounds amazing on any amp based on the fact that you get can get 100% of your tone through the pedal and almost no original sound of the amp. So with that, basically no matter what it will sound good. The output knob on this pedal is insane. It is like injecting thunder and lightning into your tube amp. This pedal has more volume potential than any other. I usually run the eq at 12 oclock, output at 9 oclock and distortion at 12 oclock. With this setting i can play anything just based on how i pick because the pedal reacts so well. - Bottom line - Nothing is better than carrying my usa strat with single coils and this pedal anywhere and being able to play anything through any amp.

This pedal mixed with a tube amp of any kind (or any amp for that matter really) can pretty much produce any rock tone you are looking for. I couldn't believe my ears for the price. All sounds are crisp and up front. Goes from classic to modern sounds. Fat overdrive. Singing sustain. Rich harmonics. Hard to find bad sounds on it.

Over the years I have owned over 10 different distortion pedals and none of them even come remotely close to how awesome and versatile this pedal is! I owned the '78 distortion and loved it! But this is that pedal and more. With more control and more room to mould your crunch, overdrive, distortion what ever you want! Buy this pedal you will not be disappointed

This is by far the best distortion pedal I've used. The 3 band eq is where it's at to shape and sculpt the distortion to your liking. The distortion itself sounds very smooth and when cranked does not sound "tinny and thin" I've since retired the MXR '78 distortion as this pedal does that and more. With the gain rolled back it yeilds some sweet and chiming overdriven tones. All in all, there are so many sounds/tones that can come out of this box so it is very versatile. Excellent job from the MXR custom shop team.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
