Yamaha's Reface DX is a 37-key mobile mini keyboard with a 4-operator FM Sound Engine, two programmable effects blocks with seven effect types per block, sustain pedal input, phrase looper, built-in stereo speakers, MIDI connectivity, aux input, and dual line outputs.

Control

Based on the FS action found on the flagship Motif XF, the reface's HQ (High Quality) Mini Keys provide premium feel and response for fast, accurate and natural playing. The Sustain pedal input allows the sustain function for all electric piano sounds.

Mobility & Connectivity

The 2W, 3cm stereo speaker system lets you play any place, any time, for up to five hours using six "AA" batteries. And its specially designed bass reflex port technology enhances the bass response for full, rich sound.

• USB "TO HOST" allows MIDI connectivity to your USB-equipped computer or iOS device
• Dual 1/4" unbalanced line outputs provide connection to mixers, audio interfaces, DI boxes and more
• A 3.5mm aux line input lets you connect and hear mobile devices, tablets and more through the instrument

Its a niche piece of gear but it does what it does very well. The reason I purchased it over the reface CP was its ability to get different sounds. You can quasi push into the CP/YC/CS territory with sound design or access to soundmondo user uploads. Its the only reface unit with presets and there are 32 of them. The effects are really good, the keyboard is really really good. The speakers are actually really good for coffe table quiet room playing. Best feature hands down: MIDI LOOPER: records midi notes/velocity from local or external gear and plays back on both and can be started stopped externally, with its size and sounds that feature alone makes it worth its price hands down. I will never get rid of it for its looper.

The first thing any reface DX owner should realize is that you need to download the supplemental MIDI Data List manual from the reface website to full comprehend the full potential of the reface DX. Practically every parameter can be automated via MIDI Sysex. It took me around a week to figure out how the MIDI Sysex worked between my Novation Zero and the reface DX but once I figured it out I could switch to the appropriate page on the reface and then adjust a control on the Noavation and see the actual change happen on the reface screen (which is very cool). I'm quite certain EVERY parameter for the reface DX can be controlled via MIDI Sysex while the MIDI CC implementation is limited. http://home.kpn.nl/m.tarenskeen/download/sysex/RefaceDX/RefaceDX.html allows you to upload different patches from other FM synths from Yamaha & Korg (including ones forthe V50 & TX81Z, not to mention the DX11 and DX100). This is probably the most rewarding FM synth I've ever used; in that it's only as useful as the amount of effort you put into learning it. The graphical user interface is what makes the reface DX THE greatest FM synth Yamaha has ever made. Keep in mind I haven't looked and or used a Montage but have used the DX27, SY77, and DX200. The graphical user interface of the reface DX is what makes the reface DX extremely powerful (when paired with an external MIDI controller). Considering it also runs on AA batteries and consumes as little as 5 to 10 percent of the electricity as a DX7 is testament to the sheer genius and ingenuity of Yamaha's designers and engineers and how far FM technology has come.

-Great sounds - lots of classic 80's FM, but with the individual saw/square feedback you can program sounds that would be impossible with other FM synths. Also, 2 effect slots - I love feeding the reverb INTO the distortion for shoegazey ambient sounds. -Speaking of programming, the interface (& great display) is really user friendly once you get the hang of it. Which is nice, considering the DX7... -Also makes a great compact MIDI keyboard. Via USB or 5-pin, I can use the keyboard to play another synth while using an external sequencer to play the DX. Sweet. My only complaints: -The looper could be use a few more features, like memory, multiple loops (one per patch?) -Only 32 patch memories! making patches is so fun and easy that I replaced all the stock ones quite quickly and ran out of space... You can back them up on the Soundmondo website, but I didn't see an easy way to back things up locally.

Cool speakers on board, 2 FX units, 4 operator architecture, fat little mini-keys- that's the good news. It's fun to program and very portable. However, you can't transfer TX81Z or V50 data in, there's no multi-timbral or layering sounds, there's only 32 memories, and it is pricey. I sold mine, but miss it.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
