I have two Seagulls and this one has a much bigger voice. The cedar top really helps project the sound. The build quality is excellent. The neck hasn't been an issue for me. While I don't have a huge issue with the price it is a bit high for a guitar with no electronics. Still, a great sounding Canadian made guitar.

I was shopping around for a long time and trying out different brands at L & Q and I was almost certain I was going to walk out with one of the lower priced Martins. I friend of my mentioned the Seagull brand and I saw one hanging there so I gave it a go and just like that I was sold. The sound and feel explains itself. Some mention that the thicker neck can make things more difficult, but I don't have large hands and can't tell. The only minor cons of this would be that the Cedar top is more prone to scratching, and there are no electronics, but you can always upgrade to have this feature added. I read lots of reviews after my purchase and it seems to be the general consensus that this is a guitar meant for people at all levels at a very affordable price. This is Canadian made which makes it all the better.

I own a Mexican Martin and use it on special occasions when sound is of extreme importance, such as when I'm performing on my own using fingerstyle, or when part of a church worship team playing rhythm. I also teach introductory guitar and compose my own material, and was reluctant to use my Mex Martin for this purpose, as I needed a work instrument that gave me good tone, playability and ruggedness.
I've had a few other acoustics over the years as backups, but was never totally satisfied with any of them, as I found many to be overrated and lacking in tone. I happened to be in Long and M once and went into their humidified acoustics room on the hunt for a used instrument. I didn't find anything but there was an S6 on display. I ran my fingers across the strings and was astounded at the quality of tone, but at that time didn't have the cash.
I've learned that even if you're looking at a particular model of guitar, each one is different and has a voice of its own, so I'm reluctant to buy an instrument on line; I have to see it first, smell it, test tone and plability action, intonation and so on.
About two years ago, Long & M Regina advertised a used S6 for a reasonable price. I snapped it up over the phone and went in to get it; I was not disappointed and have since had a pick up added by a luthier. It's a great instrument and far superior in tone when compared with other instruments of similar price. I've since acquired the bare bones Excursion version, which needs some work, dents and neck adjustment, but its tone also second to none.

I went in with the expectation to spend around $1500 on a new acoustic guitar, and tried everything they had on the wall in that price range. I have owned Norman guitars in the past, as well as Simon & Patrick, etc. But my recollection was that they weren't the easiest to play, and the necks would hurt my left fingers. Maybe it was just me. Regardless, I was then not expecting to look or try guitars from the Godin family, that day. The first guitar I tried was a Taylor 214, with rosewood back & sides, and solid sitka spruce top. I really liked it and at $1299, it was within budget. But I was just not as wowed I would have liked, and couldn't convince myself to buy it. I then tried everything in store in my price range, from Martin, Yamaha, Takamine, Gibson, Epiphone, etc. But somehow, I just couldn't find THE ONE. As I was about to leave the store, I took a look at the Seagull guitars section. There was an S6 Original, as well as another more expensive Seagull model with glossy finish (I can't recall the model). I decied to give them a try. I started with the more expensive one ($799) and were really impressed. Fit and finish were second to none, and the sound was so rich, and incredible. I was really tempted to take it home, but still decided to first give a try to the S6 Original. Well, long story short, I fell in love immediately! Not only was the sound was unbelievable, but the neck just felt as it was designed to perfectly fit my hand, and the set-up/action was PERFECT. I just couldn't put it down. But I couldn't believe this was possible at this price ($599). I then spend over 30 minutes A/B'ing it with the more expensive Seagull, as well as the Taylor 214. Against all expectations, I was just thrilled with the S6 and just couldn't believe how superior it was to everything else I tried that day. I brought it home with me, ans since then have a hard time putting it down. Both figerstyle and picked, it sounds incredible, with powerful projection and amazing sustain. I never thought anything such was possible to obtain at such a price point. I would buy another one in a heart beat! To me, and even thought I do not have huge hands, the nut width is just perfect and allows me to play comfortably, for hours. Highly recommended!

I've owned a few of these, all of them have been good. I'm sure I've played at least 50 throughout my life and have never seen one that wasnt well worth the money. I'm not a finger picker, nor do I have huge hands but I find the wide neck makes it easy to play fast lead runs very cleanly. I guess the wide neck might make things complicated for a novice, but its spec that is widely known, and they make a "Slim" model just for folks that dont like the neck on the original. So IMO, if you buy one and cant get used to the neck it really cant be blamed on the guitar.

So as a beginner I bought this guitar and struggled with it for 2 years until I figured it was not me but the guitar. By “ struggled” I mean it is not easy to play. The neck in about 46mm which is one of the larger ones on the market which makes a huge difference when you start playing barre chords. Maybe if your an intermediate player that is not a big deal but for a beginner 46mm is a big deal. Eventually I took it to a local Luthier and it was badly in need of a extensive set-up. The luthier told me Seagulls are notorious for being in bad shape from the factory and almost all are in need of a set-up. So if you are set on this guitar get it to a Luthier as soon as possible and you’ll notice a huge difference. I only wish The salesperson would’ve told me that considering I was a newbie. After the setup it played much better but the neck width continued to be a problem. I finally gave up and bought a Big Baby Taylor and OMG what a difference. The neck was 3mm smaller and made a world of difference for my playing. Anyway…keep these things in mind. I was not impressed because these guitars seemed to be marketed towards beginners and I think there are much better choices such as Yamaha ($400) or a Taylor ($500). If you do ignore my review prepare to struggle with this guitar when you come to more advanced concepts as a beginner.

Great guitar, could easily be a $1500 guitar. Plays beautifully, clear sound, great bass and mids, easy to strum, and the wide nut made it easy to practice moving from chord to chord for me. I have this S6 and a Taylor 214ce, they play much differently, I generally play the Taylor these days, but every time I pick up the Seagull from the stand and bang on it, I’m always surprised and wish I played it more. The fit and finish are top notch. The neck feels wonderful in my hand, the fingerboard is smooth and pleasantly easy to find the correct fret, and right out of the box the intonations were spot on. Love the strings it come from factory with as well. My brother is a professional musician, and only plays Godin family guitars, Norman and S&P specifically. He picked up my S6 yesterday and the look on his face was priceless, he played for about 2 hours straight and then he set it down, called his guitar rep and had one sent to his house. He had never played the cheaper of the models before, and couldn’t believe it. Buy one and keep it, and buy a case or gig bag ASAP. Only down side, be careful with the cedar top, I find it’s very soft, it shows scratches and marks very easily.

I did a lot of research before buying my second acoustic guitar after my "beginner" cheap Denver guitar. This one had specifically caught my eye because of how beautiful it is and the fact that it is Canadian made! Mine looks different from these pictures, with the back being a nice light oak colour. These two things, as well as being a price that doesn't break the bank, made me want to buy this guitar. I'm glad a did (very noticeable upgrade from my Denver guitar). The sound of this guitar is amazing. It's a dreadnought so the sound really resonates and sounds very rich. I could play this thing for hours and forget how fast time is passing by. Anytime I'm stressed, this guitar soothes me. Anytime I'm sad, this guitar produces beautiful sad sounds. When I'm happy, this thing can get loud and fill the entire house with major chords! I've had this guitar for 3 years now and it sounds better than before! There are two problems that you may have with this guitar. Since it is dreadnought style, it may be big for some people. When I first got this guitar, it was hard to get used to the big body (the sound was so amazing that I kept playing anyway), but you do get used to it. One thing I did not know, the the biggest and only flaw in this guitar is the neck width. It is wider than the standard. I have small hands so this could make it somewhat less comfortable playing this guitar, and may effect my play-ability also. Again, I got used to it. The wider neck is great for bigger hands / chubbier fingers since there's a little bit more space between strings. Overall, if the size of this guitar doesn't bother you, and your budget is in this range, I very strongly recommend this guitar.

If you think they sound good new, wait a couple of years till they open up. I have a 2001 S6 Cedar that just sounds and feels amazing. No need to spend $2000 on a guitar. The sound will tell you what you need to know.

I'm in love with this guitar. If they sold it for $2000 everyone would lose their mind over how good it is, but this is no beginner's guitar. It sounds, looks, feels amazing. Only knock against it is it's lack of electronics and it you need an acoustic strap if standing up because it only has one strap button(?). Not a problem if you dont care about those things. For this money, Martin will give you a plastic guitar made in China, fender will give you kindling with strings and taylor doesn't do business for less than 1000. Buy it, you wont regret it. Made in Canada!

I bought my S6 from L&G in Oshawa 8 years ago, it is a spruce top made in 2008.This guitar sounds better every time I play it, the sound is fantastic. I have played Gibsons, Martin's etc and I would not let go of my S6 I just love it. My son has dibs on it when I am gone. So get a great sounding guitar and buy a Seagull S6.

I tried all the acoustics in L&M 's St john's store and chose the S-6 original as the best bang for the buck for me. Most all the seagull guitars had the same great feel and tone. With the slim neck it felt at home in my hands and kept me picking it up to play. I love this guitar and have had it for over a year now.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
