I've used this many times, and it really is a great all around microphone! If you are recording artist, or producer, you've got to have one of these. I use them on saxophone (Alto and Baritone), mic up guitar amps with these, use a pair for recording piano, record acoustic guitar, and that's not all! If you are looking for a great quality microphone, that can handle high SPLs, and can be used for many different applications, this is a great choice. It is very rugged, and gets the job done!

I've been doing educational / inspirational training videos for a couple of years and had been using an AT2005USB. It's a great USB mic and was getting nice results out of it ... nice warm tone, easy plug & play set up and really nothing to complain about - in fact I often received compliments on the sound of my videos (so I I do recommend the AT2005) but this year I decided to take my business online with a premium membership site by subscription - so I wanted to really polish the audio. I rented an SM7B and an SM57 and was impressed with both of them. I should say that I connected them to my computer with an Audio Interface (a Steinburg UR22MKII - also from L-M). The 7B was a little warmer but was also much quieter. with both mics I had to boost the gain to 9.5 out of 10 to get enough volume out of them. So I went online and bought a FETHEAD preamp (similar to a cloudlifter but smaller and about $100 less - same circuitry). With the FETHEAD I was able to reduce the gain on the SM57 to 6 out of 10 and with 7B I could cut it to 7 out of 10 - but man, with the clean boost from the fethead and the reduced gain, the SM57 came alive. Really nice rich tone and pretty quiet. Honestly, with the extra clean gain, the 57 with windscreen on it, sounded almost identical to the SM57. I love this mic and am really happy to have it. Its prowess with Drums and Guitar Amps is well known, but I'm telling you, this little beauty is perfect for video and audio work as well for $400 less than the SM7B - OK $300 less, because adding the FETHEAD or Cloudlifter really is necessary. Hope this helps someone.

In my review I said that the sm57 is the same mic as the sm7b other than the low cut and mid boost! That not true, the sm7b has a bit more going on than just the low cut and mid boost! the sm7b has a different frequency response, better shielding, mounting, that being said the sound is similar in some cases! the sm7b was actually an upgraded 57 because shure wasnt selling many 57's so they made the sm7b!

Ill try to keep it short! Industry standard. Probably the most popular mic for recording guitar cabinets and snare drums! This Mic isn't what I'd call flat.It gradually rolls off from 200htz and down! It's got a slight cut from 3-6 htz! a gradual peak from 2-7khz dropping back down from 7-8khz, then a smaller peak from 8-10,000khz, a very small peak around 12,000khz, then aggresively rolling off from 12,000khz! so Its nice because its not peaky above 10,000khz like alot of cheaper mics, and its got nice mid prescence, and cuts out the low mids that often get cut in post anyhow! (with pro's and amateurs alike) That being said, this couldn't be further away from just a guitar or snare mic! This is a very good vocal mic, especially for live(because it has great rejection) but could totally be used in studio aswell! Shure actually designed this mic as a broadcast mic! Its basically an sm7b without the rolloff and prescence switch! not exactly but very close, the sm7b is a tad bit warmer and fatter! but its also 500 more dollars! Also, this is a great tom mic(top and bottom)! If you want a vintage kick sound, these might do the trick!(Van Halen used 2 of these on the kick on Van Halen 2! One in the kick and one just outside the hole! They also used them on the snare and bottom of the toms! But ya, bassically this can be used on anything, gtr, bass, snr, toms, rooms, kick, overhead, vox and your going to get a sound that will definately be useable and probably unbeatable in this price range or above! Im not saying it will be the best sound or what youre after, but it will be useable and proffesional! If you are just starting out and need an all around mic, I strongly reccomend this! If you have about 2-500 dollars and want a condenser mic, I'd look into a shure sm7b, an Audio Technica AT 2020 or 4040, an AKG C-214, or a Heil Pr-40! Okay, that wasnt short but hopefully it helped abit!

I bought an SM57 and a E609 Silver. After using them both I brought back the E609 and bought another SM57. I personally think this should be in every recording artists arsenal. Best purchase I have made in a long time!

This is the standard for recording at high volumes, I have been using this mic for years for recording my Randall RG100ES, and my Carvin X100B. When you have to capture that tone at high volumes, this is the goto microphone. I have a home studio and it has a lot of background noise, turn down the mixer gain and turn up the amp, you have captured that tone. The Shure SM57 is tried tested and true. I want a few more of these mics for my arsenal.

This is the go-to mic for snare drum and electric guitar speakers. It is chosen for these two jobs over even very expensive mics. Everybody should own at least one or two of these mics. I'd like about 6 of them. I have used them for decades. --- Buy a Cloudlifter if you can afford it. It makes 57's and all dynamic and ribbon mics sound better!

I have been using the SM57 for over 20 years. My current one is around 15 years old. I have used it for vocals into a PA, recording vocals into various studio setups, and recording acoustic guitar and guitar amps. I was singing into one at a party in my early twenties and a beautiful blonde girl pulled me into the bathroom and kissed me passionately. It`s really that good!

Affordable for somebody on a limited budget and good all purpose mics. I use them to mic up my toms, snare, as well as cut vocals and it sounds like I really went into the studio. I heard that Mike Smith from RHCP recorded the entire Blood Sugar Sex album with nothing but Shure SM 57s. I see what all the hype is about now. Perfect mic for the price and well worth the investment.

Industry standard for rock/metal guitar amp recording, it's on almost every hit rock/metal you can think of. Just buy one and get it over with, you'll need one at some point. Bulletproof guitar recordings.

After watching some YouTube vids on recording metal guitar, I picked this mic up. Within minutes of plugging it in and and roughly placing directly in front of my amp (no time spent on mic placement), I literally could not tell the difference between my amp and the recording (granted, I am playing it back through KRK Rokit 5 studio monitors).

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
