I've used Cubase and ProTools and have had Sonar 6 for a long time. This version of Sonar X1 Producer and X1 Expanded and now X2 represent the coming of age and maturity of Cakewalk. Its GUI is now very intuitive, easy to customize , couple that with a good sound card/scratch disc setup and you've good superb audio all on a PC. I have a large number of excellent VST plugins that work seamlessly with the MIDI interface as well. It is my guess that when Roland took over Cakewalk, there has been some serious money, time and effort to make this a worthy DAW. Also if you purchase any Roland keyboard or MIDI device you will get a free copy of a Cakewalk LT, give it a try..I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I've used many DAWs. I started out using Cubase on the old Atari Falcon. I was fortunate enough to see the beginnings of Pro Tools. I've been using both for many years and while Cubase has grown into a full featured DAW, Pro Tools has fallen well behind. I tried Sonar after some fighting with issues using Avid Pro Tools. I was reluctant to switch but recently I upgraded from Producer 8.5 to XI Expanded. XI on it's own is a great DAW. I bought the download version with Expanded and it was a hefty 9+ Gigs to download. XI is full featured. The included plugins are very nice. Very musical. The channel strip is a huge improvement. XI has the most useable EQ in a DAW that I have ever used. The tube saturation is subtle enough not to sound cheesy or artificial. The fact that these features are built in to XI's Pro Channel is icing on the cake. No pun intended. This means less strain on the CPU and larger track counts. Expanded allows you to purchase additional modules for Pro Channel. The included Softube Saturation knob is very nice. Adds just enough fuzz to smooth out the clinical sound of digital audio or abuse it for effect. The included "True Pianos", Session Drummer 3, Dimension Pro among other great plugins are all you need to start making convincing, cd quality or better music. I used to shrug my shoulders at Cakewalk but this release has turned me. I'm a believer now. And, it's true. Many of the "new" features in Pro Tools 10 have been around in Cubase and Sonar for years now. Sonar has long surpassed PT in so many ways. Clip based gain, pitch correction, beat mapping and a 64 bit engine are all part of the package. It's worth a second look.
