This is the classic RAT tone. The standard that all other distortion devices are measured against. Heard on thousands of recordings, it has helped define the sound of the past three decade's most influential bands.

The beauty of the RAT 2 lies in its versatility. Used as a primary distortion, it excels at arena rock rhythm tones and soaring leads. Do you have a powerful amp with too much headroom for the gig? The RAT 2 nails that sweet spot where a tube amp goes from sparkly clean to warm overdrive. Maybe you already love your amps distortion. Use the RAT 2 as a boost for solos and get the extra kick you need.

The RAT 2 features the legendary the legendary RAT Filter control. Turn it to the right to roll off brittle high-end frequencies. Having trouble cutting through the mix? Turn the Filter down and allow the natural brightness of your instrument to shine through. The Distortion and Volume controls dial in the perfect amount of gain while keeping the level consistent with your clean tone. While there's no mistaking the legendary RAT tone when the pedal is on, true bypass switching guarantees that no extra noise will creep into your signal when it's turned off.

All RAT pedals feature:

100% analog signal path
Pro Co's classic, virtually indestructible steel enclosure
Heavy-duty, industrial footswitches, knobs, and jacks
On/Off LED indicator
Sloped face for easy stomping
Glow in the dark graphics
Military-spec glass-epoxy circuit board
AC jack (RPS-1 power supply sold separately)
"No tools required" battery compartment (9 volt not included)
Five year limited warranty

Bedroom player, here, and a picky one when it comes to equipment. Was looking for a versatile overdrive/distortion pedal that would work well with my wonderful new Boogie California Tweed amp. Knew I'd found the answer as soon as I turned on the RAT. It can do everything -- overdrive, distortion, fuzz -- with a simple twist of the Distortion and Filter knobs. Shout out to the great and always helpful Cambridge staff, in this case Pat.

I just got this pedal today and am really impressed with it. Now I am new at guitar 1 year and not an expert on pedals but have over a dozen pedals including a OD-3 and a SD-1 and a MXR 78 distortion. I am still fiddling with the 3 knobs to check out the sound but so far I am really happy with it. Seems very heavy duty has a great warranty and simple to use. The staff at L&M were awesome as usual, Thanks MATTK for the tips, oh and the price was very good, I had been looking at another similar pedal and it was 3 times the price and more complicated, I like simple.

i love a good high gain tone as much as the next person, but unless you have the gain below about 9 o’clock, everything is just a muddy mess of sound. if you want a wall of noise or a solid lead tone where you’re ONLY working on the higher strings, this is what you need, but i’ve yet to find a decent tone where chords have any clarity in the notes

Does what it's supposed to do. But I still prefer Danelectro's FAB Metal. At $$35 you can't go wrong. It's smoother and cleaner than any distortion pedal I own. Sorry RAT 2, MT-2w, DS1.

This pedal is an absolute classic, and a monster. It may be old now, but it's still amazing. With it, you can do an arena rock lead, and if you turn the tone brighter, you'll want to divebomb on a hot pink superstrat while wearing leopard print leggings. People commonly associate the tone of this pedal with being bright, however you can easily tame that with the tone knob. Also, most distortion effects are nasal and scooped, but this has a nice and punchy midrange. Before buying this pedal, I spent years looking for a good glam metal distortion. I eventually did research on this pedal, and felt that I'd found my dream glam metal tone. I later went to try it out, and was amazed, so I bought it. I don't regret this purchase at all, and I don't think you will.

There's a very good reason the Rat is one of the all time classics in the history of guitar effects. Incredibly versatile, incredibly musical, incredibly moddable, incredibly durable, incredibly quirky and incredibly rock'n'roll awesome. From it's snarling tones to it's wonky rodent-like enclosure, it bares it's razor-sharp teeth in face of all your other overpriced indie boutique hand-wired cork-sniffing pedals (I'm looking at you, 1981 Inventions). A few caveats before you shell out: one major shortcoming is the lack of low end. In a band setting, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, and your bass player might thank you. However, if the lows are really important to you for playing at home, etc., you might want to look elsewhere. The JHS Kilt for example is a close cousin of the Rat but features a toggle switch to bring the lows in or out. Another major annoyance is the odd-sized power input jack. I can't believe Proco still hasn't addressed this and gotten with the times. But it's not the end of the world - your power supply probably has a compatible power cord (e.g. Voodoo Labs). But don't let those things hold you back... especially at this price, who cares! If you don't quite love it, you can mod it too... I did with great results. Owning a Rat is owning a piece of rock history. If it's good enough for Dave Grohl, Graham Coxon, Thurston Moore and Matt Bellamy, it's probably good enough for you!

I like the tone, but its all treble. I played around with this thing for a year trying to make it work but this pedal just sucks out most of the low end. I've since moved on to other pedals for my uber-distortion parts.

People looking for a natural sounding drive generally overlook pedals that are identified as "distortion" pedals. Do yourself a favour and don't overlook the RAT. I use this pedal in front of a Tech 21 Fly Rig 5 to give a little extra juice for my guitars that have more vintage-voiced pickups and it is AMAZING! Cleans up exceptionally well, just like a tube amp. If you're looking for a little "more" than you have now, try sticking a rat in front of what you have... I'm guessing you will be pleasantly surprised!!

The RAT is a classic, and this version lives up to the name. Goes from screaming loud to extremely subtle and everywhere in between. I've only knocked 'Features' down from a perfect score because I find the filter setting almost always sounds best cranked to the left to maximize brightness. But that could be a personal taste thing. Extremely durable and outrageously dynamic. Would recommend to anyone.

I was trying out a lot of dirt and fuzz boxes. I was having trouble stacking my distorted sounds. The Rat was great out of the box. Great bite but rolls back really nice when you need it too. Plays great with other pedals when I stack it with other effects. It hasn't left my board since I put it on. Super impressed also super surprised to have waited a long time before even trying it. Quick and simple features, no frills rock n' roll.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
