Le fifre était un instrument extrêmement populaire aux États-Unis pendant la période allant des années 1750 jusqu'à peu de temps après la fin de la guerre civile et, en raison de leur utilisation importante pendant cette période, ils ont été reconnus comme un symbole du patrimoine national.
Le fifre est un croisement entre une flûte à bec et une flûte traversière, en ce sens que, comme une flûte traversière, on souffle à travers le trou de la bouche pour produire le son, mais, comme une flûte à bec, on couvre les trous ouverts avec ses doigts pour obtenir les différentes hauteurs. Encore utilisé dans certaines fanfares militaires, le fifre est un instrument merveilleux et constitue un excellent point de départ pour apprendre les rudiments de la technique de la flûte.
Ce fifre Yamaha de qualité produit un excellent ton et est de couleur beige. Un tableau des doigtés est également inclus.

The Nuvo Toot tutorial that one can download on the internet, works perfectly well for the Yamaha fife. The fingering chart works the same way, as well as all the exercises therein.

I have played a large variety of wind instruments, including flutes, recorders, fifes, whistles and ocarinas, and am always on the lookout for 1) great design that produces quality tone and playability, and 2) good construction materials, with 3) reasonable cost.
Yamaha has obviously taken some extra time to design an effective tone hole and core shape, and used quality manufacturing, to make this instrument that plays remarkably well and produces a tone far better than you'd expect. Don't let the low price fool you. With the great number of high tech plastics making their way into the musical instrument market (and let's forget the lousy plastic out there!), anyone who bothers to take premium design considerations into lesser priced instruments stands to make leaps and bounds ahead of the market. Yamaha aced this design and I can easily say that this model is one of the best surprises I've had in woodwinds. Try searching the wooden woodwind market for top quality headjoint design and quality wood; it's rare and you have to search the world over to get them. Plastics now can be a great choice for woodwinds if the design considerations and expertise are up to the challenge, and the manufacturer doesn't start out with the attitude of just "dumping a cheap instrument" on the market. In this regard, Yamaha is in the same category as Gao, who have also never intended to be flooding the market with low-end quality. If you play woodwinds, Yamaha plastic recorders are also high quality and get great reviews for tone, intonation and playability. It's about hitting all the notes and having tone and control. Buy it yesterday.

I play saxophone, & bought one of these to see if I like flutes. It has a solid sound in C major plus cross-fingered chromatics, meaning it's not in the traditional key for a marching fife. It's really aimed at pre-flautists & makes an excellent camping, picnic, or child-proof instrument. Tone can be beautiful in the right hands - check YT for the model YRF-21. I find I practice more now since I can toss it in a bag or glove box without worry; it feels tougher than my old Aulos recorder & I think I could afford to replace it if I accidentally drop it in a chipper or something.

You really can't go wrong - a fully working instrument for about half the cost of a set of decent guitar strings.
It's well crafted, portable, maintenance free & almost indestructible, but most importantly - it plays & sounds quite nice.
Technically I'd consider this more of a "travel flute" than an actual fife.
A great "starter" instrument for those seeking to properly develop the correct embouchure, as well as a solid travel flute for those seeking a handy "go anywhere" companion.

Nice sound, excellent tuning, utterly weatherproof: I've owned one of these for 38 years and it's a true road-warrior (though the cleaning wand isn't very tough).
... and in all that time, the price of these things has barely doubled. You can't even say that about *bread*. :-)

Yamaha builds a great instrument. It's built like a rock, all of the notes sound, and has a quality tone. No it's not a $200 wooden model, but for the beginner or someone looking for an instrument that is durable and weather proof it can't be beat.
