The new 9500 series pedals are available as a Single Pedal or Double pedal and either a double chain version or a direct drive version for 2 distinctly different feels. In the instance of the double chain version this can also be modified into a belt drive which is also included. Both pedals feature a new beater design which offers a choice between felt and plastic surfaces whilst they also feature a new narrow under plate to allow for easier set up, especially when placing the slave unit on a double pedal next to hi hat stands.

this pedal is everything a direct drive pedal should be .it's fast quite and powerful .I also like the rubber to protect your bass hoop I'm sure if this pedal was available from any other drum company it would be at least another 100$.

As usual, Yamaha under-hypes and over-delivers. I play heel-down, and was looking for a pedal with more precision and response than most chain or strap designs are inherently capable of delivering, particularly with that playing style. I traded up from a Yamaha 9500C chain drive (don't get me wrong - a great pedal for the money) to the 9500D, and I haven't been able to stop playing it since bringing it home yesterday. It literally feels like my foot is a part of the pedal, directly connected to the beater. It's precise, responsive, smooth, and unbelievably fast. I can't "outrun" it, even at modest spring tension. It's also eerily quiet. And the myth that a DD pedal is short on power is just that - a myth. (The "power" of a pedal is a function of the cam/stroke geometry, not the drive connection itself.) Yes, it's missing the cam/stroke adjustability and other features that some of the (far) more expensive DD pedals offer, but it has everything that I want or need in a simple, quality design. It's also worth cautioning that a DD pedal is not for every playing style. It definitely "plays" much different than a chain or strap drive. However, if you're thinking of trying DD, I highly recommend checking out the 9500D before dropping two, three, or even fours times the money on a pedal that certainly won't deliver that much more value.

Incredibly responsive and by far the quietest pedal i have ever played. There're no squeaky springs or clinky chains to worry about.

I tried out Tama Speed Cobra and the Sonor Jo Jo Meyer pedals as well. For the money, the Yamaha was excellent. For my jazz drumming style, it was preferred over the Tama.
