My name is Adrian Blaney lead guitar player for " Tracenine" Cambridge based band , travel to Europe to USA for gigs.
I purchased the HD500 for my hotel room so I can jam with my laptop, rehearse at home any time of day or night, well this unit has pretty much changed my world of gear, I love my Mesa Boogie amps, and many more top brands that is a little too wild for my band budget, the LINE 6 HD500 does it all amps effects, recording and much more its quite impossible to explain the possibilites of this unit from live to studio to at home to bed room, the tones are huge, read the manual its not a Ikea product with an allen wrench and we ignore the instructions , this unit is a serious unit but holy F*&^% fun its hard to stop playing once you get your fav. tone set up. I love this unit and I'm going to buy another I ordered a gig bag carry case ( by Gator pt# GK-2110 if your interested )works and fits perfect $29.00 plus tax
so all in all I love it and Im going to be using this unit live very soon to support our new album/CD/iTUNES . For the amount of cash you spend on top notch effects $900 LOL Line 6 is less than half that with more and more for you to enjoy. Cheers Adrian

I have the "old" POD HD 500. Some people talk about the fact that you can run out of processing power when trying to incorporate a lot of "processor-heavy" patches like reverbs. The new 500X (the change is basically cosmetic, not substantial) is supposed to alleviate some of the issues with the running out of processing power in the drive to get every patch imaginable run thru the 500(X). Well, the simple solution is to use outboard gear since you have effects send and receive on the 500. I can have six individual effects wired into my Boss BCB-60. Its not sacrilegious to have Boss and Line 6 stuff working together. Plus, the 500X only has 20% more processing power so people will max out that limit too soon enough. Being in charge of how much processing power you allocate to which effects is your responsibility. Pick and choose effects that are really needed. David Gilmour uses echo but not reverb. I think I will wait till the "old" 500 drops in price and pick up a second one. That way I can run a real stereo output with full amp sims. I wish Line 6 would have done with the 500/500X what Boss did with the the RC-50/300 - increase the power/memory by a factor of 10.

I rented this board for 2 months, because I barely scratched the surface of its abilities in the 1st month.
I've run into the 'not enough processor power' when i overloaded a preset with effects.
But everything it can do is more than any other pedal I've tried. I am also quite impressed with the amp modeling
and mixing you can do with them.
But even after this time I feel like i just penetrated the surface and havent even explored all the possibilities.
I'm going to buy it. End of story.

I would agree with much of what Gord said in that, putting aside the "traditionalists", the HD 500 combined with a Tyler Variax connected via the VDI cable is a set-up that is hard to beat. Certainly because of the complexity of the unit and the enormous number of features, your time and patience will ultimately be rewarded. I recently purchased a Roland GR55 guitar synthesiser, installed the GK3 pick-up on my Tyler Variax and I now have the best of both worlds and the "ultimate" in sound. One thing I did learn, however, is that I found the user interface(both on the unit itself and on-line) with the Line 6 Pod considerably easier in being able to generate a sound that I wanted as opposed to the Roland where the learning curve in achieving what I was looking for was significantly longer. Also, the Variax combined with the HD500 modelling sounds I found noticeably superior to the COSM equivalent on the Roland hence, only using the GR55 for the "synth" sounds or most often, a combination of both.

Line 6 “Top of the Line” Guitar Effect Processor. Definitely designed for evolved intelligent guitar players with appropriate quality equipment. You have to download the updated manual that corresponds to the version of the software upgrade you have in the unit. The unit is software upgrade-able online at Line 6. It is best to have a James Tyler Variax to make use of the advanced features in the POD HD 500. You can have hundreds of different guitar tunings for your James Tyler Variax at the touch of a button on the POD HD 500. Many other effect settings are also available/editable. However, the computer chip runs out of processing power if you try too many effects at the same time. 8 effects is the outside limit and some effects use more processing power than others so you have to decide which effects you really want. You can get fantastic results but you have to learn how to operate the unit by reading the complex manual and practicing trial and error with a lot of settings. You will get great results if you put the time and energy in.
The Line 6 Community is large and online. So you have access to a lot of information. Having the time to sort thru that information is a luxury. It is best to find a handful of killer sounds and then slowly build after that. At first, you have to sit down and woodshed thru a lot of presets, some are good, some are not. It is easy to edit presets with practice. Each bank has four presets. There are 16 banks and 8 set lists. So you can have a different preset for each song for your gig if you wanted, organized in set lists. I find it best to have a couple of clean sounds and a couple of overdriven or effect sounds on each bank. That way it is just one button-press to get a new sound. When you are on stage you do not want to be doing a lot of tap dancing with your effects unit. Another important point is that if you use a certain amp to listen to while you are editing sounds then make sure that is the same amp you use on stage. I used a high quality Fender amp (Supersonic 100) to edit sounds at home. When a did a gig recently where I used someone else’s amp and the distortion preset sounded horrible because it was going thru a cheap amp.
Between your James Tyler Variax and the POD HD 500 you can use a normal guitar cord or you can use a Variax cable (a modified Ethernet cable with XLR clasp ends). The Variax cable gives you the alternate tunings and different guitar sounds (if using the POD HD 500 as the contoller). It is easier to control the Variax with the POD HD 500 than it is using the built in controls on the guitar itself. On the guitar itself you have a handful of tunings and on the POD HD 500 you can have hundreds of different footswitch-able tunings and effect presets hands free. Fender and Roland are experimenting with guitar/effect integration but Line 6 is miles ahead of them in that department. If you want to record straight to the board or recorder you can use some of the digital amp modeling built in to the POD HD 500. The quality of the modeling is miles ahead of anyone else on the market. If you want to use a tube amp you can bypass the amp modeling and use the standard guitar effects like reverb, delay, chorus, wah, octave etc. All of which is editable on the unit itself or on a notebook computer when connected with a USB cable. The James Tyler Variax and the POD HD 500 are what the future of guitar playing will be like simply because of the versatility. Evolution is happening to guitars and effects too. If you want to have your guitar sound like a 1954 Strat or Telecaster, or a 1959 Les Paul, a sitar, or a Rickenbacker 12-string or a Martin D-45 and you don’t have $25,000.00, then line 6 has the solution for you. Its up to you if you want to live in the future or live in the past. You can have your go-to Variax guitar be 25 different guitars with 25 different tunings and your fingers can master the feel of the one guitar. The POD HD 500 lets your fingers do the talking and your feet do the walking.
