Only Alesis or Kat percussion HiHat pedals are compatible, both of which are discontinued. Not all sounds are available on all pads, example splash cymbals are not available on the upper (bar) pads. Pads sensitivity not equal across different pads. On the upside lots of sounds and are really good.

Lots of potential with this unit, but there are some basic features that have been overlooked. First, no preset loops can have tempos adjusted in real time. There are different tempos of the same loop preloaded, but if you don't want those, you can't change them on the unit. Second, the ability to quantize user inout patterns on the unit is lacking....not *as* big a deal, but a basic feature on the Yamaha DTXM and Roland SPD. If a firmware update doesn't/can't address these basics, I'll likely go with the Yamaha and their iPad app.....still, soooooo much potential with this hardware.

Right out of the box, this thing is a beast! The samples and loops are top of the line and IMO better than any of the other competitors. With a price tag that is lower than Roland's equivalent, This thing has all the same features, plus more! The programmable lights and large COLOR screen are a great feature to show you what sample is where. Notice how every person who has the Roland has that ugly green tape with labels written in sharpie..get with the times! This also has 5 trigger inputs and 2 foot switches, I can control my kit up and down, and even a looper all with my feet. The ability to have 9 pads of different sounds on one kit along with my two kick triggers and a snare trigger makes my imagination the only limit to what I can do with this pad. If you are looking to purchase a sample pad, avoid the cheapies (like Alesis' previous models) and get this unit! I have compared to the Yamaha, Roland and the previous Alesis models, and this blows everything else out of the water! Oh did I mention it has 32GB of onboard storage, plus you can add an additional 32 by adding a USB stick..... Killer unit!

I've rented out many instruments from, Long and McQuade and I think I finally found what I've been looking for!!!... I am by far from being a professional musician but, when I brought two of these terrific instruments home with two speakers by, Yorkville I was blown away!... Their exactly what I've been looking for to express my deep love and passion for music!... I am so thrilled and overjoyed that perhaps I have finally found something to express my voice in music!... I have my challenges with finding the right instrument as I have a learning disability but, now I can say with complete confidence that I think I finally found the instrument that could turn my life around in a good way!!!... Thank you so much, Long and McQuade for being a huge part of my life especially now when I needed you the most!!!...

This unit seems to have a lot of the best features of the Roland Octapad, and the Yamaha DTX Multi 12, PLUS a sampler. The one main thing it lacks, however, is a HH Control Input. The external input labelled HH DOES NOT support a HH pedal the way the Roland, and Yamaha do, it is merely another trigger input. If you are looking for a trigger pad with a sampler, this works. If you are looking for a portable drum solution, it is sadly lacking. I will be returning mine, and going with the Octapad. If they ever add the HH controller, I would reconsider. NB. It was like pulling teeth, finding this out from Alesis support.

...Just an addendum to my earlier review - the unit can be a little glitchy sometimes - but seemingly only when you're dealing with importing larger samples. I've had it freeze up several times, and also outright crash and spontaneously reboot several times, but only during the import process. Once the samples are "in there" however, it seems to be fine...maybe this is something that will be addressed in a future update (?) Other than that, I stand by my initial assessment...I've gigged with it once already and it was rock-solid- A dedicated computer-based editor would be a great addition, but not totally necessary...it's still way easier to get your samples into the unit than an SPD-SX...I'm just a lazy dude.

So Far... 3 of 3 customers found this review helpful

I am writing this for the benefit of anyone that may be considering making the switch from an SPD-SX to this unit. So far...so good. The build quality is at least as good as the Roland unit. the pads feel really good - a little softer - but it feels more natural when you're playing velocity-layer samples...it feels like you're 'digging into' the pad a little bit, as opposed to a hard rubber surface. Triggering is as-good or better. The factory sounds are numerous and of a a sufficiently high quality. Some of them are outstanding...particularly the Latin and Middle-Eastern stuff, and finally a percussion pad with usable Roto-Tom samples ! It's reasonably intuitive to get around on, and the top levels of menu functions are laid out sensibly...I haven't felt the need to consult the manual yet, but I haven't gone too deeply into it either. My main reason for switching to this unit was for live use -I was attracted to the concept of being able to assign colours to pads...It was difficult on the SPD-SX to know exactly which sample was on which pad, and when you're triggering chords and strings etc, hitting the wrong chord is not a desired outcome. Now I can look at the screen and know exactly which sample is on which pad for whatever kit I'm on...invaluable. Other cool features : -The ability to sample right into the unit from any input source -The ability to truncate and save samples right on the screen...no external editor required ! -The effects are freely assignable...by the kit or by the individual pad - also, effects can be assigned to a pad like a switch...useful for turning filter effects on or off while playing. So far I would have to say that this unit is kicking the SPD-SX's butt on pretty much every level, but time will tell...I haven't used it live yet, and will update this review at some future point once it's been out on a few gigs. I gave it an overall rating of "4", just because It's relatively new to me...but I can imagine that this unit will indeed be a SPD-SX killer - So far I'm glad I made the switch. I hope this helps someone, particularly if they're 'on the fence.'

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
