All Kildare models have a curved windway, separate head and body sections, and a slightly tapered bore. Pitch can be easily adjusted by pulling jointed sections in or out as needed. Unlike chromatic Recorders, Pennywhistles are diatonic instruments, requiring many sizes to make playing in all keys (tonalities) possible.

The most popular sizes are in the keys of high D and low G. Whistle body sections of the same series are interchangeable with a head section of the same series.
