Half a point off just because the aesthetics are pretty plain. Personally, sound quality was all I was after, so fancy inlays, etc, didn't matter. This is a stripped back high quality unit made for music, not to be flashy. The only problem with this guitar is that it doesn't get played enough! I bought this as a learner guitar after playing a a range of cheaper acoustics around the $500 range, but jumping up to this level was a revelation (I paid around $1700 for a new D-03R in 2003). The difference in sound is massive, so if you don't want to spend the extra $, just don't play this line from L'Arrivee, you won't be satisfied with less after! Incredible sound and amazing value for a Canadian made guitar with all solid wood construction. Gibson and Martin may have history over L'Arrivee, but the quality of sound / tone from this dreadnought is just superb, and it's easily built well enough to be a lifetime, heirloom instrument as well.

Bought this guitar 12 years ago at Bud Monahan in Peterborough (now L&M) the fact it was made here in Canada was appealing to me. Grew up in a bluegrass playing family; but the Martins were out of my price range. Picked up this D-03R and really liked it. A bluegrass vet I have known for years played it summer 2008 and told me 'in ten years, you will absolutely love this thing'. Since it was new at that time and sounded great then, I didn't know what he was getting at. Now I do. Age has done this beauty wonders. The sound now is fantastic. It is set up now with DR stings and sounds great. Love this guitar

When I bought my D-03 I tried a lot of different guitars. I went in open minded only knowing I was looking for a dread. For the style I play, Taylors just don't do it for me sound-wise (although they will appeal to lots of players for lots of reasons)...I tried them but it wasn't for me. The Martin D-35s are great. I tried a Gibson J-35 as well as a bunch of others. I didn't want electronics, I wanted my money to go in to sound quality of the instrument so pickups weren't a consideration for me. No cork sniffing or headstock concerns. Eventually, I played a D-03R. It had everything a Martin D-18 costing 50% more had, and then some. Other guitars were as good or better, but nothing even close in the price range. For me, it was an easy decision. Buy a Canadian product, that sounds as good or better than its competition, for a lot less money. This guitar continues to improve over time. Tuning stability is rock solid. Comes with a great hard shell case. I really like the neck. It has massive projection and lots of low end. I like the sound strummed or finger picked. Sounds best with Martin or (maybe surprisingly) Ernie Ball strings to me.

I bought mine from the Toronto store in 2001. The only difference was the pick guard was clear back then. This has been a fantastic guitar from day one and I've put tons of miles on her but am religious about case humidification. I do notice that when the humidity jumps to insanely high levels in July that sometimes the high E sounds a little thin above the tenth fret. When I bought it I auditioned a bunch of Taylors, Martins and Gibsons but this one kept speaking to me. Mine doesn't have the most beautiful looking piece of spruce in the world but it sure sounds good. I've had to replace a machine head but that was due to my stupidity in over tightening. I use heavier gauge strings and I was told the last time that I had it set up that the neck will have to be reset in a few years (apparently Martin does this for free but not Larrivee). Even so, this is a guitar for a life and I will happily do so when the time comes. Mine was made in Vancouver. I can't speak for the Oxnard made versions.

The deep rich tones to the clear highs are evenly matched in sound resonance. Only the top of the line Martins and Taylor guitars can come close to the quality and sound of this guitar. This is premium top notch hand crafted guitar at a reduced price as compared to the competition. Put your money to the sound and not the name.

I bought this a few years back at L&G Surrey BC. The guitar has a beautiful sound that shimmers and reverberates deeply and fully. Other guitar players that try my Larivee can't put it down. I love the rosewood - tried the mohagany in the store (sapele, I think) and it sounded brighter and really pretty, but the rosewood has such a rich, piano-like sound. Nice service from L&G. They give you one free set up and guitar string change - I was very happy buying there.

Such a rich booming tone when cranked on, but so silky smooth at an idle, just beautiful!

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
