P-90 - Single Coil with Soapbar Cover
First introduced in the early 1950s, Gibsons legendary P90 singlecoil pickup produced a raw powerful tone that helped define the blues and rock and roll in their formative years. Today, the P90s traditional combination of high output and brilliant tone is still considered a favorite among many top musicians. Known by such familiar nicknames as the "Soapbar" and the "Cobalt," the P90 still cuts through any type of music, all while displaying amazing tonal sensitivity for everything from blues and rock to mellow jazz riffs. Its perfect as a vintage replacement, and features vintage, braided two-conductor wiring. Its also fully wax potted to eliminate any chance of unwanted microphonic feedback.

I've always chased the humbucker tone wherever I went. I fantasized about getting a single coil guitar (Fender), but always landed a new Gibson because of the feel. However, I bumped into the new 2019 Gibson Les Paul Specials and got one with 2 of these pickups in it... I wasted 17 years until I realized how much I love the sound of the P90s. The description for the sound is: An airy, thumpy (bouncy), clean, amplified tone that is aggressive with distortion and with a quick attack and natural response. I love hand picking with this axe. I like modding my pick ups but I don't have a real reason to swap them because every other pickup is trying to emulate the original Gibson P90. These are expensive but they sound pretty darn good. I would recommend them for jazz, classic rock (amazing for this), funk, but not metal. If you are not a single coil person but would like to find a middle ground where you can get the leads and the snap... get a P90 guitar!

Took me 20 years, but I finally swapped out the p100 bridge pickup from my 1997 LP Special to a p90.
I wasted 20 years of my life.
To be fair - the p100 is an awesome clean pickup and I didn't want to lose that flavor. There is nothing better for a clean funk sound IMO, but it does not sustain or compress enough for biting leads which is where I've been going lately. With a p100 neck and p90 bridge my number 1 guitar is now a weapon of mass destruction and I couldn't be happier.
