Gibson Custom Shop is the pinnacle of craftsmanship, quality and sound excellence. Each instrument celebrates Gibson's legacy through accuracy, authenticity and attention to detail.

Regardless of the fact that George Harrison and Eric Clapton rocked a '64 SG Standard, that model year was clearly a standout for SGs in general. The clunky sidepull vibrato had been replaced by the dependable Maestro Vibrola. The neck profiles had increased in size, resembling the prole found on 1959 Les Pauls. And the balance, playability and look of the SG seemed to come into its own. For all those reasons, Gibson Custom Shop is proud to present the newest member of the Historic Reissue family -- the 1964 SG Standard Reissue. Along with the Maestro Vibrola and chunky neck profile, it has all the hyper-accurate vintage specs one could possibly want -- original construction methods, a real red aniline dye nish, chemicallyrecreated plastics, replica electronics, and more. The result is perhaps the best looking, feeling and sounding SG Reissue yet.

I have played SGs since 1975. I've had a dozen over the years from early 70s walnut with harmonica bridge (1971), to an SG III (1970) along with several in the 80s, 90s and, 2000s. They have all been great instruments. I own a couple of early 60s Gibsons (ES 175 and melody maker) as well. From a weight perspective, playability, tuning stability, trem bar that works perfectly, playability, and tone, this is by far the best instrument I've ever owned. I'm that guy who tries ever single guitar in a store over a period of time. This is the finest instrument I've ever owned or played and it is worth every dime they charge. I tried epiphones and mid-level SGs with an excellent guitar tech. They still just cannot do what this instrument does effortlessly and consistently - Make me sound half-decent. If you like SGs, the custom shop is worth it and this instrument in particular is unparalleled quality from every perspective I can think of down to the wood grain, the pickups, the nut, the saddles, you name it - They have put in the work and the product sings. This electric rings loud like an acoustic it is so well balanced. Just wow 5/5.

I got this guitar for several reasons. First found out they were making them during the Namm 2019 coverage and said, if I find one, I must play it. Then, I acquired a CS SG STD second hand in April and got the SG bug. I knew right away that I wanted a second one as soon as I got the first so I’d have a backup. Then, in the coming months, I found out that several of my favourite players specifically sought out original 64 SGs (Tom Bukovac, John Shanks & Colin Cripps). On top of that, it’s the same year that George Harrison and Eric Clapton used back in the 60s. As a result, I sought out one of these guitars as an original would be too expensive and hard to find. Went to the Mississauga store to check it out and there was an instant connection. 10 minutes of playing the guitar and I was sold. Great neck (not too small and a good nut width), nickel hardware (will age nicely in time), a VOS finish (not too glossy & new), beautiful sounding pickups (they’re not potted, so it takes some time to master using them with gain, but it’s worth the wait and you can get beautiful controlled feedback when you want it) and a great sounding and usable tremolo unit (my needs are fairly subtle on tremolo. I use it mainly for textural parts). The guitar stays in tune very well, even when using the tremolo. I set up the intonation and pickup heights to get the most out of the instrument, but it was more than 90% ready to go right off the wall. The only question I have is about positioning the tremolo arm when the guitar is in the case. I have been storing it up pointing towards the case handle side and had no issues, but if anyone knows of a better way of doing it, please let me know. This is an awesome guitar. It covers a large variety of genres and sits in a mix beautifully. I would definitely recommend it over a Les Paul for singer/songwriter stuff as the eq lends itself better to open chords. It’s a great all rounder though. It can ably rock out when it needs to.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
