I purchased one of the first Mackie SRM Flex units to arrive in Canada to replace a five year old Bose L1 Compact. I was drawn to the Mackie SRM Flex because it is feature rich with a six channel mixer, 10” subwoofer and Bluetooth streaming built in plus it has a remote control app. This is impressive tech for sure but what about sound? There’s the catch! This 1300W PA can get really loud but it has nowhere near the rich sound quality of my 160W Bose L1 Compact. Also, the 90 degree projection of the Mackie SRM Flex doesn’t even come close to the 180 degree projection of the Bose L1 Compact. This latter point is critical because I can place the Bose behind me and I hear what the audience hears and so no monitors are required. When I tried this same rear placement with the Mackie SRM Flex I could not hear my vocals very well and I started getting feedback which never happens on my Bose L1. Finally, the high frequency tower in the Mackie SRM Flex really sticks together and it is difficult to take it apart at the end of a show. Ok, I still like the Mackie SRM Flex for its high tech design but if you are trying to replace a Bose L1 Compact the sound and build quality just doesn’t compare. I’m guessing if you are starting clean with no comparisons you’d be very happy with the Mackie SRM Flex.
