Read online that this amp was good. Couldn’t be further from the truth. Absolutely waste of money unless you already have top of the line pedals to make this garbage sound good. Doesn’t matter how much time you spend tweaking the knobs on their stupid app the sound is the same. Sounds like you’re under water and everything this mushed together. No actual musician would ever be satisfied with this useless waste of money.

For my particular purposes this amp is perfect. I wanted an inexpensive light weight modeling amp for practice and/or small gigs that sounded professional. The added bonus is the ability to modify parameters to the smallest degree via the computer. That really helps to tame any inherent digital shrillness from the distortion models. By comparison the Katana sounds very similar to the Roland Cube 60 I used to have. I think if one compares the Katana to amps in the same price range they'd be hard pressed to find anything with the many features and the quality of sound.

I bought the Katana primarily as an acoustic guitar amp, and am generally very pleased with the sound quality. My guitar has a L.R. Baggs Anthem system, it blends well with the Katana for a fairly authentic acoustic tone. I've also plugged my Yamaha portable keyboard into it, and the sound quality is passable. The portability is a BIG plus, allowing me to take whenever I want to, and will even keep up with a drummer who isn't trying to jackhammer concrete. Thanks to Paul Benteau at L&M New Minas for explaining the details to me.

The katana 50 mkII was easily the best amp for the money. With the boss tone exchange you can get all the tones you will ever need from clean tones to extra crunchy metal tones and anything in between.

I got mine one week ago and have been enjoying this amp. There's nothing like a 12 inch speaker, and it sounds big and 3D. Built-in effects are easy to use. The reverb is so pleasing, too. There are many usable features as well. So glad that I got this Katana!

I've used vintage early 60s fenders for over 50 years. They can't be beat .but this amp is a different thing all together tight modern sounds , good pedal platform ,and so much lighter to bring to practice can't wait to bring it to a gig to add to the tremolux tone

I've had the Katana 50 for over 3 years now.
Giving it 5 stars for reliability, versatility and tone considering the price point.
I bought it as a basement practice amp, but it came in handy at wedding (not mine) 1st dance acoustic set :)
I use mostly the clean, crunch and acoustic channels, all of which are great. Boss did good work emulating tube amp response with control know adjustments.
I have a Traynor tube combo amp - comparing to Katana 50, I still prefer the tube amp's tone at loud-ish/loud volumes but usually I play when the kids are sleeping and in that situation the Katana is way more useable.
Effects are excellent as expected.
I only used the Boss studio software once, meh, too many controls - I could see the value if you are recording and seek very specific sound/tones. I'd say the built in effects are all I want, along with my simple stomp-box pedal board (OD, Comp, Mod, Delay, tuner -- Katana handles these quite well directly into the main input)
I'd finally add that this amp is quite sturdy and indeed can be very loud, though i run it on the most attenuated power setting usually
It is amazing how much such small $200 or $300 amps have improved, Katana 50 is a prime example.

I just play at home now day using loopers and backing tracks so I didn't need my tube amp anymore, so I didn't need the hassles either.
Going from a single channel tube amp to an all in one is difficult...spoiled for choice. But the short of it is that it sound great.
I don't like the amp modelling thing, I keep it on clean and use the built in boosters(many choices).
It takes some pedals well. I kept my SL Drive and Keely Compressor in front and they sound great. TS Mid range pedals not so much.
Delay and Reverb are great. The mod emulators are really good. Interface is a bit over the top on some emulators like 8 options on chorus.
I still prefer pedals and kept my phaser, trem and WAZA Craft Delay, but I will never get anything new as it is all there.

As you can tell by the reviews, this thing is a beast. It has a ton of built-in effects and more than enough power. Build quality is fantastic as you would expect from BOSS. I have owned this thing for a year at this point and have never thought about buying another amp since. It should be noted that in order to modify the effects and tones you will need to download a free program from the BOSS website, and you will need to connect the amp to your computer with a USB-B cable, which is not included. Thankfully I had one laying around, but from what I gather those USBs are kinda uncommon so if you don't have one your gonna need to buy one separately

This is a wonderful, extendible-till-your-eyes-pop-out amp. But what I haven't seen anyone say and it's an important point for those of us who don't have the liberty of ripping away at full volume (i.e. needing to practice w/ headphones) THE HEADPHONE JACK SUCKS. You are literally not getting what the amp is producing because it's muddy. I had to use the USB output into my laptop's DAW in order to actually hear what my amp actually sounds like w/ headphones -- this is not a selling point.

I have had the mk1 amp ever since it came out and I have been able to get any tones and effects I have ever needed. I have an old Marshall tube amp and this amp and I compared then and they sounded identical. This amp is well worth your money. But to me the amp really shines when you use the dedicated tone studio

I have been playing for over 30 years and back in the early 90's I played in a classic rock band in local bars and used a Marshall JCM 800 Half Stack....but I have to say this Katana 50 MK 2 would be more than good enough for any gigging band without the hassle of dragging around a heavy amp.....this thing packs a wallop and would easily do a small to medium gig without being mic'd up. Highly recommend!!!!

I bought this amp almost a year ago and I'm still in love with it. The preloaded effects alone are worth buying this amp; I'm still finding new tones after 11 months of playing with it every day. After creating a bunch of my own presets I bought the Boss FS-7 footswtich and it works beautifully. While the 50W version doesn't have a FX Loop you can use the phones/rec out jack and an external speaker to get around that. My Boss pedals sound great plugged in the front of the amp too. Extremely impressed with the versatility of this amp and I'm now looking at getting the 100W Katana head.

I've been jamming with a Spider V 30 for a few years and built a good base on that, but plugging into this thing is a different beast. I even upgraded to the MkII for that amp, but its pales in comparison to the tones from this. Instantly I was able to dial in a rich tone, and experiment with different FX and pedals. No matter if I was chugging, playing chords, riffing, or even practicing solos - this amp was able to output a high-quality sound that I am in love with. It may not have the fancy features of a GTX50, but it packs much more a meaty punch, and I am in love with the sounds. Besides, most phones can do all those things nowadays (tuners, backing loops, metronome, etc). I've only used the 0.5 and 25W modes, and even with Master at 8 o' clock, it was producing insane amounts of sound. This toy is definitely my latest addiction!

Just be ware, 100w upward versions have a direct-out so you can easily plug it to your DAW. No microphone hassle ; p . Remember, 50w regretfully and disappointingly doesn't have it!!

I bought this amp a few days ago and have to say I love it. Best sounding amp for this price, easily sounds as good as amps that cost much more. The half watt mode is great for my apartment too, Only thing I wish was different the placement of the controls. I am not fond of them on top, would be much better on the front like the artist series but I will prob use the app on my pc for that stuff anyway. More control. Love it.

I have owned the original boss katana 50 for about 2 years now and it's phenomenal. I wanted something so I wouldn't have to waste money on pedals and this is exactly it. Buy this amp and a foot switch and you can't go wrong. It's well worth the money. I have never had a problem with it. It's been working great and I plan on getting the head and a 4x12 cab. This amp is hands down the best amp I’ve owned and it’s not even close. For a practice amp I had a little 20 watt Fender Mustang 1 and it sounded decent enough for the price and for regular rock but I love playing metal. And this amp has the tone I need, I’m after a deeper for crunchy tone that sounds great in drop tunings for more modern metal. This amp NAILS it. You’ll pay double for triple trying to match its sound, which I’m sure some people do because they may not think of BOSS as being a go to when it comes to amps. Don’t be them, save your money. It has over 60 BOSS effect pedals and TONS of other features on their app. I mean the savings on the pedals alone is worth it. Last I’ll say is that it also has excellent clean channels. Not that tin/hollow sound it’s a nice full clean tone. And you can switch to “crunch” channel for a little break up for some blues jam outs. 100% would recommend. To me, this is the best practice or jam amp in the market within $600 of this price atleast.

This is the best amp I've ever had. Tonality is unreal, the Boss Tone Central allows you to plug your amp into your computer and download tones for literally any artist or song imaginable. i have yet to turn the volume past 10oclock since 10oclock is super loud. I can only imagine what noon and forward would sound like. You can play this amp as low as it goes and still have the best tone response. Also a feature that i've used since day 1 is the rec-line out. You can use programs like Garageband or Logic on your computer once you've plugged the USB from your amp to your computer. At this point you can record your playing and it works amazingly. Best 300$ i've ever spent. This is literally the best amp.

the best amp I’ve ever owned hands down. Out of the box the tone is great for most styles but i found if you really want to unlock its full potential you need to hook it up to a computer and run boss tone central . It’s emulated output is far superior to an old fashioned line out. It’s compact and light so transport is a breeze . For such a small amp it sure is loud .

I was looking for a decent combo amp for a while and had decided on the Boss Katana right when they released the Mk2. I had played the MK1 in store and was super pleased with it so figured I’d wait for the Mk2 to hit stores. In the mean time I rented a Line 6 spider V 60watt so I Atleast had something to use while I waited. I picked up the Mk2 finally and boy does this thing make the line 6 seem like a toy when it comes to the tones that come out of it. Super easy to dial in great sounds from the 12” speaker and boy is it loud! I haven’t tried out the computer software but I am more than pleased. The aesthetics and build quality all seem great to top it all off. If you’re looking for a great amp that doesn’t break the bank this is the one.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
