DiMarzio has been working on serious vintage single-coil design with no hum for twelve years. Their goal has always been to capture the best qualities of pickups heard from the 1950s and early 60s. Pickups from the early 60s had a unique tonality: they were steely, yet woody-sounding. Naturally, DiMarzio wanted to nail this sound, and do it with no hum and less magnet-pull. The Area 61 does it. It's good in all three positions. It's the perfect bridge pickup with a pair of Area 58 pickups if you want to go all the way from Nashville to Texas in one guitar.
Q & A
There are currently no questions for this product.
Some reposting/repeating from the Area 58. Also a good PU, as advertised.
Got this and an Area 58 for an HSS. Most everything in the descriptions are true, except maybe the EQ tendencies for the 58 to be bell-like and 61 to be chimier. Neck position is bell-like, middle is chimier, both PUs. If the 58 lends to more bell, you'd need a great amp and a good buffer or 2 to ensure all that nuance is there. Otherwise it's more about hotness and the tendency to overvolt compress (bluesy PU distortion). The 58 is less volume for same height, barely a sonic difference otherwise. I like this 61 in the neck for all the sonic absorbtion my brain thinks is there. I usually have a fan on low, it's barely noticeable. When I split my JB HB, there's the noise these hide. (I use nickel strings.)
If these are "Texas Style", I can say it's the over-volting of the signal that prevents other signals from being relayed. So string muting for triad chords or less, it helps prevent that wanted signal from overloading. TMYK

A terrific unit. Bigger and warmer sounding than the stock Fender Strat pickup I replaced it with in the neck position. Quieter than a standard humbucker but really nails a clear, balanced single coil sound. The reduced string pull is noticeable and it improved the sound of the neck/middle combo. Highly recommended.
