Back in the day, I had one of the original Variax creations and not too long ago I purchased the JTV 69 Tyler Variax which is a big step up from that original. Combined with the latest "Workbench" software and the significantly increased processing power of this instrument over the original design, your creative pallet is virtually limitless. For the traditionalists who question whether or not the modeled instruments compare accurately to the original, I say even one instrument within the same model of a regular guitar from the same manufacturer can be different from one to another so that really isn't a factor. This is an excellent quality instrument when combined with an HD Pod and its two way operation with instantaneous choice of models, tunings and effects at the touch of a button makes this an unbeatable combination far more valuable than whether or not the various modeled guitars sound exactly like the player's perceived idea of what the original instrument might sound like. I prefer to create might own sounds from scratch anyway, not copy others and the Tyler Variax, unlike any other guitar in existence, allows you to do that.

If you’re a traditionalist like I am, the first thing you do when you encounter an instrument like this is raise your nose at it. But aside from being a traditionalist, I’m also very practical. I play in a classic rock band and sometimes need to go from The Eagles to AC/DC to The Beatles, to The Rolling Stones then to Whitesnake one after the other. That’s when the nose comes down and the practical part of me takes over. While all the electric and acoustic (6 & 12 string) guitar models are fantastic, and being able to add a sitar or banjo to some songs is awesome, the real selling feature for me was being able to switch tunings on the fly. We’re dropped down a half step to start, but being able to do Brown Sugar and Can’t Get Enough in open G (5 string) tuning at the flip of a switch is extremely useful. And throw out your CAPOs while you’re at it. You won’t need them anymore. The first thing you’ll notice when you strum a chord with the guitar unplugged is how loud the guitar is acoustically. The second thing I noticed is how great it played right out of the box. This fit and finish was top notch. This is a quality instrument. I’ve done a couple of gigs with it now. I love this guitar. But don’t take my word for it. Go onto forums and YouTube and try and find a band review. There are none. I’ve added the Line 6 POD HD500X Effects and Amp Modeller to the mix. Now, there is no sound I cannot get. And the HD500X recognizes the Variax so you can do some custom routing with the effects, amp and guitar model. While the guitar is powered with an internal rechargeable battery, in a pinch, the HD500X can power the guitar via an Ethernet cable. But, even if the guitar modeling is not engaged, the guitar plays just like a regular guitar with magnetic pick ups. But even using it that way, it sound really good. The last feature is the free software you can download to create custom guitar sounds with custom features like pick up selection, pick up placement, capacitor values. The possibilities are endless. The software will also manage all the guitar models and custom tunings. There are a couple of banks on the guitar where you can store your own custom models and tunings. I've had this guitar for 3 months now. I've had this guitar in my hands more than any other during that time.

This model (JTV-69) feels and looks like a high end Strat. This is my preference. There is a JTV-59 model which feels and looks like a Les Paul. There is a JTV-89 which feels and looks like a shredder type guitar. Any of these models can play 25 other guitars on it and have have your preferred look/feel. Plus can have many alternate tunings. And if using the highly-integtrate-able POD 500 HD can have 500 different tunings with different instruments with different effects at the touch of a button. This is far superior to any other guitar-amp combination out there. Line 6 is miles past any of the so-called competition. You have the future of the electric/electronic guitar in your hands with a James Tyler Variax. Software upgrade-able online at Line 6. Many music professionals cannot hear the difference between the Martin D-28 acoustic and the Variax digital version. Especially in a stage environment where you might play songs that require many different kinds of guitar sounds - having so many high quality guitars at your fingertips makes this guitar so practical. This James Tyler version of the Variax has its own real pickups and plays like a high end Strat with a humbucker in the bridge position. It has become my go-to guitar because it is so versatile. Evolution is taking place in the world of the guitar and the effrects unit. It has been a lot time since there was a huge leap forward in the guitar world. Not since the introduction of the Fender Stratocaster in 1954 has there been one instrument that has so totally been a game-changer as the James Tyler Variax.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
