Although not the best Pre Amp in the world, and can't stand up to the $1k models. With a bit of work this can be ok. The tube that comes with unit (at least mine) was an unbranded, cheap 12AX7 (not the 12AX7A indicated on the box - the modern revision of the 12AX7 that's supposed to be quieter). When pushed it sounded pretty crappy. I replaced it with a Tungsol 12AX7 and the sound was much much better. IF YOU DO THIS YOU WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY so use it for a couple of hours first to make sure everything works before opening it up. Take the 4 screws out (a large Phillips head) and carefully unfold the top. It'll take a bit or wiggling to get the old tube out, but if you take your time and make sure you don't bend the boards you should be ok. Due to the low voltage of the unit, you'll need to have it running for a while for the tube to warm up to hear any benefit from the unit. Also, after replacing the tube, you'll need to get the tube worked in so leave it on for a few hours and then put in some audio through it for an hour or two. It makes a big difference.

I owned one of these little units a few years back. Here is a few things to note about this unit: A: It's a starved plate design, meaning that the tubes are not getting enough juice to impart their special character. B: The preamp actually runs off a supremely cheap OP-Amp From my experience, nearly any (including pretty cheap,) interface preamps will pass a nicer fuller signal than this unit. If you want a "true" tube preamp on a budget, the ART MPA preamps are actual tube preamps that can give you the proper sound a real tube pre should.

I wasn't expecting a lot from a $60 mic preamp but this unit is amazing!! The tube warmth of this preamp is truly unbelievable. Love the fact that it has 48V Phantom Power and phase reverse on board! Basically a plug and play unit, it takes just seconds to get a good sound from this thing no matter what microphone you throw at it!

I bought this because I have the ART Project Series one that includes USB, and love it so much I wanted another so the whole band could sound that good. Useful as a DI, and the tube warmth / compression / overdrive is very handy in many situations. Doesn't sound great if overdriven too much, but when tastefully done it's amazing.

I used this as a gain stage/DI box to connect a keyboard to my PA mixer at a recent gig and it sweetened up the piano sound more than I had expected. The brass and strings sounds had improved as well. Nice performance for the modest price. Highly recommended.

Nicely softens and warms up acoustic guitar with metal strings. Well made - metal housing, quality connectors. Limiter is a plus. Overall, a great value.
