Yorkville
YSM8 High Performance Powered Studio Reference Monitor (Single)

Additional Photos:

Compatible with virtually any source, the Yorkville YSM8 has a widely variable input trim control for the balanced XLR / 1/4-inch combi-jack input. Four position high and low frequency trim controls (at -2, -1, 0 and +1.5dB) allow user adjustable EQ contour to compensate for speaker placement in less than perfect listening spaces.
The YSM8 is designed for professional studio applications and for punishing listening environments where the widest possible sweet spot and higher volumes are required.
Contoured MDF baffles, custom designed soft dome tweeters and high quality low frequency woofers used in Yorkville's YSM Series monitors combine to minimize front face reflections creating improving phase response, providing a wider 'sweet spot' in the listening position. Front facing port design solves the issue of bass coupling with back walls and corners in small environments which can generate false low-frequency information in your mix.
Rock-solid 3/4-inch MDF cabinet construction with heavy internal bracing and ample internal dampening material reduces unwanted low frequency rumble ensures Yorkville YSM Series cabinets reproduce source material with near pinpoint accuracy and detail.

Severe white noise/hiss issue 6 of 7 customers found this review helpful

The speakers have amazing sound and spacial imaging for the price. I monitor traditional East Asian music. The way these speakers reproduce drums made the hair on my arms stand up. It was almost surreal.
That being said, these speakers have severe white noise/hiss issues, even when idling empty (nothing connected apart from the power cord). I sat a good six feet away from the speakers and the hiss still come in clear as day. This was enough to give me a mild headache when they're on at idle. Furthermore, since much of Eastern music has frequent silent passages, this white noise is enough to intrude into the music.
Both of my units did this, at the same volume level, regardless of connections and knob positions.
These speakers also readily picked up an FM radio station as well as Wi-Fi traffic (in the form of rhythmic clicking), a symbol of poor or nonexistent shielding, which makes me wonder whether a lack of shielding is the cause of all that white noise.
I brought them back to the store where an employee and I compared their idle noise to a few other speakers. We both concluded that the YSM8 had far more pronounced idle noise than all the other speakers we've tried.
Otherwise these speakers are solidly built and come with all the on-board frequency corrections/trims one would need. The only missing feature in my opinion is auto power on/off.
The Yorkville YSM8 would be killer studio monitors if only Yorkville could rectify the white noise issue.
3/5 because after all they sound amazing. A crying shame.
Good sound but questionable quality 7 of 7 customers found this review helpful

HOWEVER, when i first bought these one of the cones was extremely distorted if you played anything below 200hz on it. I returned it to the store for a replacement (sidenote, the staff at my local store were very understanding and helpful, I really appreciated how easy the warranty claim was). My second monitor now, the one I haven't replaced, is making an awful crackling noise and the Input Sensitivity knob cannot be touched or the speaker stops producing sound. If you turn the knob, again it makes an awful static noise. I have been experiencing random drop outs from this monitor and random peaks or valleys in volume. I am now noticing that the bass frequencies (below 200hz) are again distorted on this monitor.
Over all, I like the sound but am disappointed in the build quality. They're a good sounding inexpensive monitor, but the problems I am having are frustrating and I can't give this a good rating because of it. Buyer beware.

4 years in, still amazing 4 of 5 customers found this review helpful

I did have the Yorkville sub but returned it. I have to assume it was not made with the same sound engineering effort. Can't recommend. If you can get the JBL mentioned above, its a perfect match, but I believe it's discontinued. For value these monitors easily beat the competitors in this class, Yamaha and KRK. Bottom line, they are great.
Flat response but flawed 8 of 9 customers found this review helpful

Love them vs Yahama, KRK, Focals, Dynaudio 6 of 7 customers found this review helpful

In contrast, the 6.5'' Yorkvilles had comparable bass to the Yamaha 8''. I'm finding them flat but warm. The 8'' Yorkvilles also sounded great and there was less of a drastic change than between the different sizes of Yamahas. Just overall balanced, consistent speakers. I didn't try the 5'' but for my tiny room, I now see 6.5'' is appropriate. I don't have to turn them up loud but they sound very clear. They do not overwhelm the room like I expected.
I tested the low end on "Frog" by Carbon Based Lifeforms, "Candy Walls" by Trust, and "Enchanted" by Delerium. The Yorkvilles are the only ones that caught some sloppy mixing on the Frog track. And "Enchanted" caused the port on one of the Focals to buzz. I tested the Yorkvilles also on some Rammstein, NIN, synth pop, and a couple of acoustic tracks.
It all sounded very balanced on the Yorkvilles. I've had about 3 days listening to them now. So far, not regretting my purchase. I had my heart set on the Yamahas, but these sound so much better and quite a bit cheaper.
Also, the front-facing port is great. I can have these closer to the wall. I really like the FRONT-facing blue glowing power buttons.

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty
A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.
Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.
How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
- Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
- Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
- No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
- Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
- Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
- Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
- Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
- Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
- Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.
Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.
Purchasing additional years of coverage
Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.
If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:
- NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
- USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
- GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
- BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
