I've been playing clubs for 35 years and this is my first Mesa amp. My last gigging rig was a Bogner Shiva, which is an awesome amp but weighs 85 lbs and at 80w, has way, way more headroom than I ever need. So for years I have been looking for a much lighter amp, in the 30w range, with all the bells and whistles (2 channel, fx loop) and a more modern vibe rather than vintage. The 5:25 totally fits the bill. The cleans are the thing that surprised me most; very crisp and 3 dimensional. Then there are 3 "dirty" settings over two channels, a foot switchable EQ with two modes (preset "V", and graphic eq) and a configurable boost. The dirty modes provide a huge range from light crunch to fully saturated modern rock tones. Extremely versatile. There are three power modes for each channel (cool that the channels can each have separate power ratings!) 5 and 15w are class A and 25w is class AB. As a consequence the 5 and 15 behave very similarly but once you go to 25, the amp's behaviour changes quite a bit, especially the overdrive characteristics, which have a stiffer, less spongy feel. Not a huge deal but something to be aware of; if you dial in the perfect tones at 5w at home and then get to the gig and switch to 25, be prepared to have to do quite a bit of tweaking. 25w is a little light in terms of clean headroom; I find on club gigs with two guitars and live drums the clean channel started to get a bit ratty and compressed. That's not a huge deal for me but it might be for some people who want crystal clarity. The other thing for folks new to Mesa amps is that the tone controls work very differently than on, say, fender amps. Instead of conventional eq, you need to think of them as cascading gain stages; so in order, the preamp volume hits the treble which feeds into the mids which drives the bass. Once you get that into your head the amp's behaviour makes more sense. When setting up the tone controls, start with them at 9 o-clock, not noon like you would on a fender, and gradually add "boost." Otherwise you get a mushy over compressed mess. Overall, a great, versatile, lightweight amp that will do the trick in 90% of situations. The only downsides are the limited clean headroom and the fact that it is a touch on the spendy side.

This is the second Mesa that I've owned. I had a Rectoverb 25 combo which I really did love, but had to part with it. The reason I went with the Express Plus is the 5 watt option. I don't know if there are any other amps that you can play at low volumes and still get great tones. At the other end of the volume spectrum, for a 25 watt amp it is loud. Will keep up in a lot of live situations. Build quality is outstanding. I can't recommend this amp enough.

I'm very happy with this amp, it's versatility and power are incredible. I had been using Traynor amps and had been considering moving to Fenders when I discovered the Mesa Boogie 5:25 Express. The clean channel is very good indeed with both my single coil and humbucker guitars. I find the Burn mode in channel two to be very burning and so must disagree with previous posters on this issue. Having the ability to switch from 5,15 and 25 watts sealed the deal for me. Great job Mesa Boogie !

Only negative is that the burn channel doesn't really burn. A distortion pedal can fix that. All the other modes are great. Clean is particularly impressive.

channel one has beautiful clean..and the crunch in ther other half of channel one is smokin.. channel 2 has a nice blues sound but on the other half of channel 2 the burn is well not really burning, it comes alive if you add a distortion pedal

I've owned a bunch of the earlier Express models, and what always bugged me was the noticeable hiss on the clean channel, and the lack of channel-independent low power modes. Both of those issue go away with the new version, plus a whole lot of other (useful) features. Awesome amp.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
