For the bassist entering the world of the pure electric upright, this instrument offers the combination of design, performance and affordability exceeding any other instrument in its class. True to the NS tradition, the WAV readily captures the essence of an acoustic, yet opens up a wide range of new possibilities.

The solid maple body and neck with a graduated fingerboard, delivers the rich, full tone you expect from every NS Instrument. The WAV Series brings the same clarity and fullness with every note. Asymmetrical fingerboard relief and an adjustable bridge and two-way truss rod allow the player to tweak the neck relief and string heights to suit the music and personal playing style.

The WAV's Polar pickup system includes a convenient toggle switch between Arco and Pizzicato mode. Use the Arco mode for a traditional acoustic response for either bowing and a percussive plucked sound, or switch to the Pizzicato mode for uniquely even and sustained plucked sound, opening up new dimensions to the sound pallet. The piezo-powered passive electronics deliver an amazingly natural tone with unlimited overhead for extraordinary performance without the need or hassle of batteries.

Compact and lightweight, the WAV Double Bass is an excellent instrument for musicians on the move. It comes equipped with a stand, and padded gig bag that carries the instrument with a handle and strap and includes separate pouch compartments for storing the stand, bow and accessories. The loaded gig bag will fit in the overhead compartment of most commercial aircraft.

In previous May review I didn’t make it clear that I was describing this model, not the shorter- scale Omni, and I should’ve caught wrong ref about being 34” Omni scale. That’s what I was originally thinking of ordering. NS model names are a bit confusing so be sure to carefully confirm with your sales rep if it’s the Omni ones you want! The Omni’s are usually a special order and not shown on the website!

This amazing instrument produces phenomenal rich tone (e.g. straight into a Bergantino B-Amp with MESA 12? cab) without needing any extra processors unless you like to have a wide palette of effect options. Here I just want other standard electric bass players to know (e.g. if only used to playing on Fenders, Ibanez, etc) who haven't handled the Omni that the NECK profile still has big, double bass dimensions much wider and deeper than the basses you're used to! The fret scale has been shortened closer to those electric fretboards, but otherwise you're gonna be working a traditional double bass neck, requiring major learning curve and long enough fingers to reach everything due to extreme, double bass curvature that makes it playable with a bow.

For a context, I'm not an upright bass player. I play cello & bass guitar. So, I cannot possibly compare this instrument to an acoustic double bass in this review. Also, I run it through POD HD500x acoustic bass presets, which includes amp & cab simulation which give me a very decent sound both with bow & fingers. Thus, I have no idea how it sounds DI or with minimal processing. Construction: This thing is solid. Really. Yes, it's smaller than a real acoustic bass, but it's still guaranteed to check every door frame you ever plan to walk through. It will survive and won't even go out of tune. The only weakness is the tripod stand -basically, it's a modified mic stand. I find that I sometimes need to step on one of the legs to pin it in one place. The stand also inconveniently spins. However, that has nothing to do with the bass -just get a better stand. Portability: It fits easily in any car. A little heavy to walk for a long distance, but really... do you prefer to lug around a full sized acoustic bass? This bass is great for a gigging musician. Sound: Get a good multi effect unit, IR processor, or whatever piece of modern tech wizardry that makes a broom with a laundry rope sound good and this is a silly rubric to review. It sounds amazing through my setup, no matter what I throw at it -fuzz/dist/chorus/delays etc. Dry sound with a good amp and eq is great too. Has a bit of a buzz and hum once you add gain, but noise gate solves the problem. The arco/pizzicato switch is a bit unnecessary. Yes, I play mostly with the bow, but I never use that switch even with pizzicato playing. Maybe in a rockabilly application it's cool, otherwise it's just harsh, thin, and nasal. Overall -if you feel comfortable playing fretless and would like to learn to use a bow, or maybe you're a jazz player that is sick & tired of lugging an instrument that is bigger than you -this is definitely an ear & budget friendly way to go.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
