Les Paul Custom Electric - Ebony Finish - Gold Hardware
This product is no longer available.
History
The introduction of the Les Paul Model in 1952 provided the fundamental template for the design of what would eventually become the most revered stringed instrument in the world. Yet Gibson president Ted McCarty and the guitars namesake, Les Paul, also sought to introduce a deluxe version of the soon-to-be iconic model. The final design for the new Les Paul Custom was completed in early 1954, and the guitar made its official debut at the Chicago NAMM show in July 1954.

Initially, the goal had been to introduce the deluxe version in conjunction with the original 1952 Les Paul, yet Gibsons drive to achieve excellence resulted in several unexpected delays. The final product, however, would eventually become Gibsons top model in the original Les Paul line.

The 'Fretless Wonder'
The first version of the Les Paul Custom was nicknamed the Fretless Wonder for its low frets and Black Beauty for its rich, contrasting ebony color. It was also introduced at the same time as the Gibson Les Paul Junior and represented the ultimate in Gibson solid body design at the time, with an original price tag of just $325, which was $100 more than the regular Les Paul Model.

Aside from its obvious visual enhancements, the Les Paul Custom was the first Gibson guitar to offer the revolutionary ABR-1 Bridge, which was invented by McCarty. This pioneering achievement was a true revelation in intonation and remains one of the most revered and copied pieces of guitar hardware ever developed, setting a standard for simplicity and functionality that has never been bettered.

Other standard appointments included a thicker body design and seven-ply body binding on both the front and back of the guitar, along with a multi-bound headstock that featured a prominent five-piece split diamond patterned inlay of genuine mother of pearl a design that still graces every Les Paul Custom made today.

Near-perfect Recreation
Todays Les Paul Custom is based on the model from the mid-1950s, but with several modern appointments. The body of the guitar is crafted with a hand-carved maple top, which is then fitted to a body made from a solid piece of mahogany with strategically routed holes to lessen the weight of the guitar, resulting in a Les Paul with enhanced acoustic qualities and improved resonance. The 24 -inch scale length neck is also made from one solid piece of mahogany then topped by a 22-fret Richlite fingerboard outfitted with pearl block inlays, and given Gibsons traditional rounded profile. The pickups are Gibsons 490R in the neck position, which offers the tonal characteristics of the original PAFs, and the 498T in the bridge position, which swaps the 490Rs Alnico II magnet for an Alnico V, thus making it slightly hotter with emphasis on mid-ranges and highs.

Other appointments include Gibsons legendary Nashville Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, metal tulip tuners, multi-ply white and black binding on both the top and back, gold hardware, and a 1 11/16 nut width. The Les Paul Custom is available in Antique White, Ebony, Heritage Cherry Sun Burst, Wine Red and Silver Burst,

Features
- Solid Mahogany body with hand-carved Maple top
- Richlite fingerboard with pearl block inlays
- 490R in the neck and slightly hotter 498T in the bridge
- Legendary Nashville Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece
- Metal tulip tuners

I own a 2014 Les Paul Custom Black Beauty. Bought new from L and M. Only issue is the guitar does not work well with 9's. I suppose there is a tech out there that can make them work, but I've taken mine to three and none of them could solve the problem of the thing going out of tune constantly, pinging etc etc. The nut was filed over and over. I finally gave in and put a set of 10-46 on it. Solved the problem, and I can play for a couple of hours without having to retune. It's very heavy, but has a great tone and smooth playability.

Just not worth the price tag. I had one and while it had a great neck and tone, the fine detailing in the cosmetics were not great. They seem to have scribe lines showing past the diamond inlay and the logo was sloppy. It amazes me that even the Chinese knockoffs can get the inlay work to look clean. You're throwing away most of your hard earned cash on these. Get a vintage one at this price.

Noticed at least one reviewer takes issue with the 498T and 490R pups in the LPC. The gist of her gripe was that Gibson was throwing a cheap set of pickups in one of their most expensive guitars. Well...just because they don't have a flashy name like Burstbucker or Classic 57 don't mean these aren't great pickups. The 490's have been around since the 70's, thus they pre-date the razzle-dazzle marketing that everyone, including Gibson apparently, has adopted as standard practice. The 498 is a beast that cleans up surprisingly well; the 490 is a great PAF replica with rich mids and a lot of bottom end. Fact is, until a couple of years ago the 490's were the go-to pup for the Standard and most other Les Paul's. Don't be fooled by the name, or lack thereof, the 490's are great pickups. I sold my BB, with 498/490 pups, ten years ago and have regretted it ever since. Best guitar you'll ever play.

By far the nicest playing, sounding, feeling guitar I have ever played!! If you can afford one....buy one. You will not regret it. The jump in quality from a standard is incredible. If you can, get one with an ebony board. If not, richlite boards are still wicked.

You'll never regret purchasing this instrument. It's built so incredibly well, the PUPs are second to none, and it plays like a dream. If you like the sound and feel of LPs, you'll be hard pressed to find one better than an LP Custom. It's expensive and worth every penny. That said: The nut takes some breaking in. You'll find that strings stick and ping quite frequently when adjusting tuners. A tech at the 12th Fret added some graphite coating to the nut, which has made the string glide more freely. This has improved tuning issues, especially on the G string. Apart from this, it's a fantastic guitar. Case is pretty slick too =)

The playability of this guitar is endless. It's an absolute joy, honestly. The tone is very rich, it's well balanced (albeit heavy), and it's gorgeous. Like someone else said: Exactly what you'd expect a Les Paul Custom to be.

I bought my BB used from L+M in Oshawa, it was a 2006 model that had been rented a few times but was in good condition. We made the deal and as I was paying I thought I would check the COA... it turned out to be a different one than the serial number of the guitar! I asked for a bit of a break ($100) because of this, all I was offered was a set of strings!! Anyway, I had fallen in love and we are still together, along with the incorrect COA.

I've always been a fan of the black tie custom. However with the price now above $5000 dollars and this not even being a customs shop guitar without ebony fingerboard - this guitar is not worth the price tag. A custom shop 68, or 74 Black beauty for a couple grand more is way more worth the dollars than this standard black tie custom. Just my two cents.

I own lots (and I mean lots) of Gibson guitars. I sorta keep a bucket list of them, and the Custom has been on the list for a long time. Funny, it's not my most expensive Les Paul, just took a while to score one. I got mine yesterday. Black Beauty of course. More a fault of the dealer, the guitar was really, really badly set up, and very dirty. All Long& McQuades suffer from that. Anyway, I do all my own setups. A couple of hours on the bench, and she plays like she should. Pros- It's the worlds most elegant guitar. Like fine jewellery. Plays like a dream, and brings up visions of Keith, Robert Fripp, and Peter Frampton. As iconic a guitar as you can buy. Does everything a 5K guitar should, understandably. Cons- never understood why the put 489/490 pickups in it, but I suspect they put in their cheapest p/u's knowing you're going to swap them out. They use 50 cent caps. My Les Pauls at half the price get their bumblebee replicas, which are much better. Is this guitar worth 5K? Absolutely, if it's your dream guitar. I'm willing to bet, like Corvettes, all the buyers have wanted one since they were kids. Are Custom Shop guitars better than Gibson USA? Yes, fit and finish is noticeably better, they hold their value better, and have the prestige.

I own many guitars and this one is still my favorite. Bought mine new in 1970. It's a Fretless Wonder model with the super low frets. Incredibly easy to play. My friend tried it out and said it was like driving a Cadillac!! I paid just under $800.00 with a case. That was a ton of cash back then, but, I think I did ok as they are going for close to $10,000.00 these days :)

Hard to know which year to bite on these. About the good; superior fit and finish; excellent playability; gorgeous as all heck; it even smells right. About the meh; not sold on the Richlite fingerboard yet - it doesn't feel like ebony, i hate baked maple, rosewood aint the right choice for a git at this price point | hard to know what to do. Good ebony cant be used. Not confident about the new materials. Buy vintage (pre 2005) maybe?; The pups are good but i'd probably replace with '57/'57+; the shipped pups are just on the edge of too dark imo. Still lots of the honk and jangle of a real LPC is still there in this offering. Does it warrent $4k. Gibson hiked the price by 30% this year. I liked ot better sub $3.5K; which, $3k seems to be what these move for used at L&M or other (at least L&M has ez financing right?); enough about price. Carve top feels nice. Switch is solid. Pots are solid. Electronics dont buzz or detract from tone (i just prefer a but more mid punch); Unlike the Epi's and other clones, the gold on these seems to last much longer without that patina and oxidation other offerings suffer from at the 3yr point (regardless of case kept); Great git You get what you pay for and in this case you're paying for a great guitar with a designer name and braggin rights; plus it looks great on stage. Definately the Cadilac line compared to GM of the guitar world. Is it worth the cha-ching? Bro its your benjamins, thats for you to decide!

Ordered one from L and M in July 2014 My first disappointment was a brown case (I prefer black) that was slightly off and needed a bit of jiggling to get the lid to close properly. It came with a COA leather folder with serial number on the document. There was no sheet showing that the guitar had been setup/checked at the factory. I tried it out at the store and immediately noticed that the G string was binding in the nut, I had already planned to take it to Avenue Guitars for a setup after ordering as I always go there with new or used guitars. I took it home and played it for a couple of hours. The G string was constantly going flat no matter how often I stretched or tuned it. I noticed the saddles were set in a straight line on the bridge and sure enough the intonation was all off on all the strings. It had a really tight feel and bending strings was a lot harder than I remember on the one I tried in the store. So I figured if Avenue Guitars found anything wrong it would be a warranty return so off I went to their store for a setup. I was ready in about a week and the tech did a fantastic job, The saddles were all adjusted (and not just slightly) so obviously the intonation was way off. He filed the nut a tiny bit and lubricated it to stop binding. The G String now tunes and stays in tune without binding. I would like a little more fine tuning on the tuners as they are not as easy as my Strat for ease of tuning. I find 10's are tougher to bend than 9's so I had 9’s installed. Now it's not such a struggle to bend the b string a full tone as it was when I first played it. The action on the guitar was fine when I got it and the tech didn't raise or lower it. It's not buzzing or fretting out and it's easy to play bar chords and play leads without any strain and the notes seem to be pretty accurate ie the intonation is good on all the strings. So I was quite disappointed in the setup of this guitar - considering the price. I guess the stories of quality control problems have some truth to them. Thankfully I had a great setup by the tech at Avenue which resolved the issues. On the plus side,,,, the Richlite board is a non-issue for me. I have a rosewood fretboard on my Kramer Pacer Imperial and Maple board on my EC Strat. This one feels solid and smooth and to be honest I never think of it while I'm playing. It feels a little like my Strat's maple board maybe a little faster - basically a solid hard fretboard The ebony finish, gold hardware and binding are all perfect. I got a lot of ooh's and ahh's when I opened the case at the two stores. It's a beautifully crafted guitar. The neck feels slightly larger than a 60's neck that I tried on guitars that were advertised with that feature. But it is very comfortable to play. I find the upper access is harder above the 12th fret compared to my Strat but it will just take getting used to. I have played this standing up for a couple of hours straight the first day and found a tiny bit of shoulder ache but it's probably three or four pounds heavier than my Strat and will just take getting used to. I'm not currently gigging but would expect a four hour show with breaks would be ok to play. Big difference in the tone compared to a Strat and a Kramer - the bridge pickup is a little dirtier and brighter and the middle/neck is rich and has a lot more bass. I'm still dialing in my amp but with the settings I usually use it works fine. I find I have to back off on the bridge pickup tone control to get a little less treble. So in conclusion the guitar was poorly set up at the factory but was rescued by my guitar tech. It has the best build quality of any guitar I've played and it feels comfortable and sounds great. I had an old 70's LPC that I sold and I knew I wanted another one and now I have it. This will definitely be played - it's not a collection guitar.

Bought this new in 1994, just for the look. I once had a black Standard that I paid a good thousand less in 1984 but I messed it up when I put a Kahler bridge on it. I knew my dream guitar was going to happen sooner or later. One thing with a Gibson: let it age.The white trim is now yellowed and the body has some minor signs of wear and tear but the tone gets better year after year. I rated the features a little lower as its not a Strat and is a bit of a one trick pony. The quality is better than the Standard I had. I will keep it till I die.

A good Les Paul always feels to me like it plays itself; I put my hands to it and my fingers know where to go. That said, not only is the LPC in black/gold stunning, it has the widest range of sounds I've ever heard from one instrument. Without any effects, and some mid-range gain on my amp, I can run from warm sweet blues on the neck pickup to crunchy, filthy screaming power through the bridge pickup with just the switches and dials on the guitar. Maybe it's the bumblebee capacitors, maybe it's the magic. But there's nothing like a Les Paul Custom, a heavy-duty cable, a tube amp, and nothing else.

it is a thing of beauty and it does sound amazing and I am more than happy that I own one but I just gotta say, 4000 for a piece of wood with 6 strings on it, I dunno. as I said I love it (to death) but I feel that its 1500 - 2000 dollars worth of hardware wood and craftsmanship and 2000 dollars of name. the only reason I justified buying one is that if I take real good care of it, it will probably be worth as much or more than I paid for it in years to come. I guess the bottom line is, if money is no object get one

this is an incredible guitar ,visually stunning as much now as it was 6 decades ago but it definitely is heavy and will be hard to use on a regular basis gigging due to weight and delicacy/breakability issues . the cost is too high to use something this valuable nightly as it is slightly delicate. my Gibson Les Paul custom had 2 neck breaks because of a few reasons, one being the fact the headstock angle is too dramatic combined with soft mahogany , a large truss rod cavity lends itself to being a very weak area of the guitar which could easily be corrected but the purists cry about a scarf joint, reduced neck to headstock angle and a volute which would permanently correct these well known issues without changing one of the most loved, beautiful and valuable guitars of all time.. i personally owned a 1969 gibson les paul custom, bought it for $600 in 1986,sold it for $1000 in 2002,and now its worth around $6500 to $10,000 of course because i no longer own it,lol!!!

This is one of those rare instances when a work of art actually plays as good as it looks. The LP Custom is definately eye candy. But look out when you plug it in! Whether you're chunkin' Drop D riffs or treading lightly with some jazz hooks, this bad boy aims to please. And the sustain is absolutely crazy. Pricey but everyone needs one of these in their arsennel. Gibson at it's finest.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
