Succursale Kanata, Ontario
My wife and I were on vacation in Newfoundland and I loved the local music, which usually featured the button accordion, so I thought it would be fun to play one. Christian at Long & McQuade in St John's was very helpful and showed us two entry level Hohner models and the Carlton.
To my ear, there was not a significant difference sound-wise between the three instruments. My initial impression was that the quality of the instrument was not quite as good as the Hohners but it wasn't too far off. The Carlton was the least expensive, plus it came with straps and a hard-shell case which would have been extra with the Hohner units. The case is nothing fancy but it does the job of protecting the instrument. Given the price difference the Carlton won hands down.
I've played around with the accordion for a week now and I'm enjoying trying to figure it all out. The only weak point so far is that the straps it came with are too short, however Christian did warn us and we got a second, bigger, set of straps. If I ever get good at this, I may invest in a better instrument, but then again, maybe not, as this one is doing the job.
