I purchased this keyboard about 3 months ago. So far I am very pleased with sound & quality. It was also very reasonably priced. I only have one critique & that is there is a very audible "knock" from the keys when played. What I mean here is when key is pressed down you do hear a noise from the key, so be aware of this before buying. I'm still not sure I will keep this keyboard because of this "noise"

I had done some research online to find a new keyboard for myself and after coming across the DGX-650, I knew I had to have it. I tried out several other keyboards before actually purchasing this one, and I have to say that none of them came close to being as good. The DGX-650 was way less expensive than some of the other keyboards, which is great because I expected it to be the most expensive given its features. It has somewhere around 530 different sounds/instruments and although some of the sounds are a bit low in quality, the majority of them are actually very good. The keys are weighted and feel very similar to those of a real piano. You are able to record up to five of your own songs, which is great for anyone like me who would want to record a song then play it back to sing with it. You can also add layers to the song if you want. I only purchased the DGX-650 a little over a week ago, so I haven't had the chance to try all of its features yet. These are just a few of the basics! I would definitely recommend the DGX-650 to anyone looking to buy a high quality keyboard. It looks great, feels like a real piano, has hundreds of features, and many song options. It's very good for the price it is at.

I am new to playing the piano but I did heavy research to see what would be an optimal piano for a reasonable price. I owned a simple Casio CTK 1100 keyboard for $80 and founded I needed something with an acoustic piano feel to guide me in my new found music passion. This piano gets great reviews and rightly so. Pros: Great quality feel to a real piano. The keys are nicely weighted with heavier keys in the low end and lighter in the high end. Practicing on this I know I can transfer my playing to a friend's acoustic piano with little difficulty. Excellent sound system for the price - the speakers are only 6 watts supposedly but pack a punch with their own tweeters. Easily a million features - having dual and split on at the same time is really handy. There's tons of combinations when you add the DSP and Harmony. The piano has options for individual volume control between accompaniment, instrument, dual and harmony which is useful on downloaded midi files where it has it's own mixer volume. High polyphony which can handle anything you throw at, even while holding the sustain pedal. The USB recording is very handy if you want to experiment or connect additional downloaded styles or songs to the unit or create your own. It's done in a high quality wav format which is easily convertable and is CD quality. Sleek design - to me it looks better than most of the competitor pianos. The dial wheel allows you to select songs, styles, instruments with ease and is a nice design touch. Cons - Heavy Unit Although this says it's a portable piano, it's really quite heavy which makes transport a little difficult. The included stand has a couple of screws which connects the piano together and the piano forms part of the stand - a nifty touch. Still, the keyboard is around 50lbs I believe and not sure if that is because of the wiring or because of the weighted keys. This is a perfect option if you don't plan to move it too much for concerts and plan to keep it more around the house. Low quality sound on some voices/instruments - This thing has over 500 instruments to play with which means you don't really get tired of it even though some of them are similar repeats. Some of the sound effects though have a very fuzzy sound on the low end when playing on the piano speakers. The piano has a jack so that you can connect to an external speaker, but I haven't had a chance to try out to see if the sound performs any better. Limited USB recording function - This keyboard can let you record up to 5 songs with 6 layered tracks maximum. What I found was I couldn't use the Dual and Split features when trying to record a piece. For example, I tried to make a song using a harpsichord as my main with strings as a dual and the grand piano as split for my bass notes. When I did a playback it only played back the harpsichord which makes mixing a bit of a pain as you'll need to record each track individually. Small LCD screen - while I enjoy having lessons from the piano which can wait for me until I hit the right notes, the screen to learn to practice seems really small and I have to watch very carefully on the small virtual keyboard to see which notes I should hit next. You have left and right arrows to move the virtual keyboard across the screen to access the notes, but I feel it slows me down and moving it around can be a pain. I fixed the problem more or less by installing and buying a full version of Synthesia (google it, about $30) and connecting my laptop to the keyboard and having a much larger screen with full colour to guide and teach me. Conclusion - Given the price this is a steal. It has plenty of functions to supplement the beginning to advanced player and has a good, sturdy solid feel. As a new player, I feel I can learn and grow from this machine for the next 10 to 20 years. This is a good compromise between a full acoustic piano and an arranger keyboard, both of which you can expect to shell out thousands more. This easily beats out any other competitors at the same price range and comes with good Yamaha brand customer service.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
