Q & A
Reviews
I have owned dozens of Tele’s over the years, most recently two different Squier 60’s custom sunbursts, and a American Original 60’s lake placid blue custom Tele, and I’ve played several American Deluxe and Elite models my father has owned and this one beats them all hands down in my opinion.
Recently I almost pulled the trigger on the 75th anniversary Tele and the American Professional II in shoreline gold, and nothing against those models but, I’m really glad I waited until this one was available, it really is that good and has so far impressed me immensely with its look, feel, playability, tuning stability and tone. The neck is simply fantastic and the best feeling finish and feel of any guitar neck I have ever owned or played, period. Not at all sticky, it’s smooth, fast, zero drag, and most noticeably to me it feels like an old worn in perfect guitar neck right off the bat. Not too thick, good comfortable shape, a soft thick V as Fender calls it, but on some angles of the hand position it almost feels thin and fast to me, but over all just comfy all around and up and down the neck. The rosewood board is great to see and not some other wood replacement type, and it’s a slab board also which is neat to see, not a laminate curved board for a change.
The body is perfect, the neck joint nice and tight, nothing looks off or out of place, great quality and craftsmanship, which you probably already know (or should by now) that the Japanese factories at Fender and Gretsch make simply fantastic guitars. The colour is gorgeous, not plain Jain and not too fancy either, just the right elements of class, pizzazz and sparkle.
The 4-way switch is a nice update and addition to the Tele with its traditional 3-way options, and the 4th position (closest to the neck) is a little fatter, a little louder and will be great for a little bump or boost for solos or parts you want to stand out a little when playing with a band or what ever the situation is. The pull up tone pot is kind of cool, not sure if I’ll personally have a use for those tones in the 4th and 2nd position but it’s an interesting option at your fingertips that may come in useful at some point. The pickups sound great to my ears, clean, clear, depending on your amp and tone settings nice and dirty and perfect for what I was looking for playing r&b - blues- rockabilly - early rock n roll type music.
The only gripe I have with my guitar in particular is when switching between the 2nd position (neck & bridge pu) and the 1st (bridge pu) there is a small dead spot where you will notice a drop off in sound if you’re ringing out a note or chord and don’t switch it fast as lightning. Every other position change it doesn’t do that. Not sure why that happens but, it’s not a deal breaker for me, I’ll just keep that in mind when playing live and switching to that last bridge pu position.
The gig bag isn’t really ‘deluxe’ just as the previous review mentioned, but it is ‘adequate’ and definitely has really decent protective padding. It’s pretty plain and subdued (all black nylon) and my idea of ‘deluxe’ for a 50’s or 60’s Tele would have been something in a tweed or maybe brown leather/faux-leather with different coloured piping on the edges, but I guess to keep the pricing down that’s the included bag.
As far as pricing goes, this one is a little cheaper than the American Pro models and definitely less than the elite/deluxe/top of the line Tele offerings, and what you do get for the $1729 price tag is a top quality, worn in custom shop feeling guitar that just feels and sounds like a perfect worn in pair of jeans feels right out of the gig bag. I honestly almost gasped when I took mine out of the inner packaging bag and felt that neck and how light it felt. Mine comes in at 6lbs 13oz. That’s a comfortable shoulder and back gig-friendly weight and with the feel, quality and sound all considered, this guitar is quite capable of becoming your number one - go to guitar.
If you get the chance, check one out at your local store if they have one, I feel you’ll be pleasantly surprised and will likely take this Tele home with you.
Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty
A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.
Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.
How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
- Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
- Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
- No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
- Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
- Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
- Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
- Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
- Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
- Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.
Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.
Purchasing additional years of coverage
Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.
If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:
- NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
- USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
- GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
- BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
