Composer: Melchior Vulpius (ca. 1570 - 1621)
Editor: Charles J. Torian, Jr.
Format: Score and Parts
Instrumentation: Brass Quartet (2 Trumpets, 2 Trombones, Opt. F Horn part for Trombone 1)

In 1609, Michael Praetorius harmonized the version of Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming with which most of us are familiar. His contemporary, Melchior Vulpius, created a four-voice canon on the same tune which, though shorter, can serve as a noble introduction to Praetorious' larger work, or even as a 'concert-opener' for something else. Clearly, the two independent compositions bear close harmonic relationships. An optional F Horn part is included in place of the 1st Trombone part. Currently, the canon is also available in these formats: for three trombones and tuba (or optional trombone in place of tuba); for four trumpets.
