As a current owner of a few Custom Shop guitars ( and have owned several ) I also now few of the American Vintage 2 series ( 66 Jazzmaster and the 61 Strat) ; the 61 Strat guitars overall , once they are setup properly, have correct vintage characteristics and have that 3d quality in tone comparable to the Custom Shop ( if you know what I mean) . Fender apparently uses premium tone woods for these guitars and the pickups have good clarity and defintion ( quack, chime, bloom and crunch its all here - pending amp setup and use of tone controls). The neck and fret work ( at least on my guitars) are very well done w/ attention to detail, fit and finish.
These 61s are super fun to play . Perhaps to be a Fender Reissue classic ! Highly recommended!

These guitars are really quite fantastic. Are they perfect? No, they have certain aspects that will feel perfect to some, and not so much to others. But if you really like vintage spec type Stratocasters, then this one just may be ‘perfect’ for you. I bought this sunburst AVii 61’ Strat the first time in early 2024, had it for about 1 year, and ended up selling it privately, this past summer, and almost immediately regretted doing that.
(in my other review on here from 2024 I mentioned the fretting out issues, but that was before I had it sent in under warranty for the PLEK service, that fixed everything)
I had it dialled in, and even had it PLEK’d under Fender warranty for initial fretting out issues and literally ANY bends buzzing and fretting out (and no, not the usual ‘7.25” radius bends fret out’ common saying) it really was a pain, but with help from Dan M at Brampton L&M, they had it sent to Pickering for the PLEK service, and it came back feeling and playing perfectly. Yes some crazy bends will still buzz/fret out, but the usual blues rock type bends work fine after the PLEK job.
The pickups are so clear and touch sensitive, and it sounds like a real Strat should. Adding a treble bleed mod to the volume pot also opens it up to getting fantastic tones with a good fuzz pedal and turning the volume pot down (to around 3-6) and you’re in Hendrix/SRV/Mayer sparkling clean edge of breakup tone land.
I ended up going and ordering in another of the same AVIii 61’ sunburst Strat again this time through Mississauga L&M and again had to deal with the fretting out buzzing issues again, but like the first time, it got sent out to Pickering for a PLEK service under Fender warranty, and it again came back night and day better playing, hardly any buzzing/fretting out at all, and I’ve got my number one guitar back again, which rarely happens in guitar life.
If you’re a fan of vintage spec guitars and nitro finish guitars, and want a custom shop feeling and sounding guitar but for half the price of said custom shop models, then this would be a great option for you. Also comes with a really nice 60’s vintage style Fender case (brown with gold/orange interior, at least for the sunburst model) My last one weighed about 7.5 lbs which isn’t bad, this newest one I just got is almost 8 lbs, but doesn’t feel very ‘heavy’ and is quite resonant and comfortable sitting or standing with a strap playing. Chords are comfy, solos and leads are almost effortless, and each pickup setting is alive with tone. The tremolo on both guitars I’ve had are excellent, with a proper setup and strings that are stretched out, it stays in tune very well.
Try one out, it may become your new ‘number one’

I have a lot of Strats, including one custom shop, some gibson's etc. I thought long and hard about buying this one. I passed on a white one several months ago knowing a red one would be available. It was a toss up.
I have an American Vintage Telecaster as well. This '61 made me look at the 52'Telecaster again with fresh eyes etc. I have to say, I am a fan of the "American Vintage" series, One or Two or Three if there is one later. Incredible guitars.
The 7.25 radius neck is not a problem for me. I have buzz free low action (12th Fret E String) and can bend as much as I need.
I can't put my finger on it but the Vintage aspect is not just the guitar, I think it is a frame of mind or way of thinking about the instrument as well.
No matter what it is this instrument is top drawer in my book. It works, it excites me, I get up early and play long before work. I'm looking at the picture of it on L&M's page right now and can hardly wait to get home to mine.
It may not be for everyone. In fact, the MIM's as well as this series and all the others are all good.
This is old school, not the latest and greatest, there are others that could be said to be better. Great thing about Fender these days as they have so much history and so much to choose from, but....
I have thoughts of perhaps one day Fender will do an American Vintage III with a '59 and/or a 65' - Hint hint?!?

Just stopped in my local store to check this out, as it was second on my list. I was on my way to test run a Limited Edition American Professional II. In lake Placid blue with rosewood neck. Didn't make it there. Just looking for a straight up strat to off set my charvel HSS , S2 custom 24, and a 85 roadstar ll SSP90 Seymour pups. Its all I could ever ask for, just adjust the pups to taste and the stable is complete .Pups are so nicely touch sensitive its a treat to play. Was really loving the compound radius 10/16 on the charvel and had not played a 7.25 radius so was unsure. It warrents a new approach to playing-which I always welcome. Happy Birthday to me lol ROCK ON everyone

Arrived from the factory with it badly setup..
In fact the setup could have been an new
employee’s first attempt, not checked, then
released to customer awaiting for the guitar they
thought would be the best Fender they’ve
ever owned , especially at the ($ price they paid..!)
Pretty disappointed.. in fact the instrument has
sat it’s case. since I took it home.!!!
The guys at the London North store are incredible
and this has no reflection on them..
I read everything online , watched dealer reviews
online( perhaps they received a good one) and I swallowed the Koolaid.
I can be once, maybe twice, but not a third time!

Great vintage spec guitar nitro finish, but bends suffer with 7.25” neck

I picked up this American Vintage II 1961 Strat in sunburst with the rosewood slab board a week ago, sounds fantastic through my amp, but I could not get the action as low as I was hoping for, so I got it set up by L&M today (thanks again Dan Batista and Paul (tech) at Brampton store) and it is much better now, lower action to where I like it, but with the 7.25” radius fingerboard, doing any bends beyond one full step on the high E and B strings past the 10th fret is nearly impossible without the note fretting out. This can be worked around by making the bends slightly further up the board ( David Gilmour or SRV type bends) but it’s a little frustrating after being able to do so on 9.5” Fenders or 12” radius Gretsch guitars. Aside from this issue it is a beautiful guitar, with a nitro finish, a nice vintage style case, real rosewood board, and pickups that sound legit early 1960’s tone. If you can work around and get past the radius issue then this guitar might be for you as well. Anyone who does not do a lot of bending and plays more rhythm or chords, or leads that don’t involve a ton of bending likely wouldn’t even notice the fretting out issue. I wanted a vintage spec nitro finished sunburst Stratocaster, so I think I’ll work around the bending / fretting issue and let this guitar wear gracefully with age and playing time, and I’m sure in no time playing it with the 7.25” radius will become second nature. I have a great Squier 40th anny strat that I can use to play Pink Floyd on if need be loll. Bottom line is if you’re looking for an early 1960’s spec Strat, and a nitro finished Fender that isn’t a custom shop model in Fender’s current offerings, then this is your best bet.

This guitar just has the right Stratocaster tone. To playing SRV and Jimi hendrix, to even getting some country tones out of the bridge pickup. Little weight and well balanced guitar. Custom shop without the price tag.

It was a long wait, but it was worth it.
I had seen some terrific reviews, and some others that were finding some QC issues as well, but I have to say that when I picked up my Fiesta Red 1961, it absolutely was worth the price tag.
When I opened the case at the store, I was met with the most beautiful nitro finish I've ever seen; the colour is the exact Fiesta Red as advertised - not a shade different. And the finish is just the right thickness that you can make out some faint woodgrain underneath; you may have to squint a little, but it's there. No scratches, no scuffs, just brilliant with that unmistakable sweet smell. This guitar drew some people over to take a look, and drew even more very positive and even congratulatory comments.
The rosewood neck is not streaky or red looking as some have claimed; it's a nice dark rosewood with some faintly lighter features that most wouldn't even notice. And the neck pocket is nicely seated; the string alignment is perfect. No fret buzz anywhere. The 7.25" radius is new to me, and I was worried that it might not be a good fit, but honestly, it felt perfect; the difference is negligible to me. And yes, you can bend without fretting out (as a few had said in other reviews); maybe they can bend up far enough to finally get it to choke out, but I can't.
Perfectly set up and intonated - not one adjustment that I had to make. It's honestly just perfect. Fit and finish from top to bottom - flawless.
How does it sound? Exactly as you hope for it to. The Pure Vintage 1961 pickups truly have "that sound" that my other Strats just can't quite seem to get to; this guitar is literally like getting into a time machine, and going back to 1961.
Would I buy it again? Yes, without a doubt. Without a moments hesitation.
The fine staff at the Kanata Long and McQuade are just the best, and such a great pleasure to deal with. My many thanks to them as well for getting this absolute gem to me.
