Question: I see these work on the “McCarty 594 SE”, how are the knobs on them attached? And would it be possible to modify them with different colour ones? If they are Nylon, would a nylon dye possibly work?

Answer: The tuning keys are fixed in place, and can't be modified.
The are made from plastic, not nylon.
