I use the classic gain channel on triode (20w) mode almost exclusively, and play original 60/70s inspired rock. As expected the icepick highs were gone, general tone shape was much more rich with a delicious break up, and the picking dynamics and subtleties in my playing were greatly enhanced. I play a Firebird with Lord Firebird Pickups, and had never been able to play my bridge pickup on full tone, because of the brittleness of the stock speaker, but now can let rip at a whim. (T3, M7, B7)
In doing the swap, I realized that the stock speaker is designed to largely appeal to newer, probably younger buyers, who would be searching for tones in the Ultra Gain channel, and looking to keep their budget under a grand. This speaker upgrade would put the dsl NEAR the SV20 in overall tone quality, so they had to keep these ones cheap, or no one would opt for the next step up, right?
In short - it sounds close to a vintage Plexi, but in an affordable combo. I highly recommend this upgrade for anyone in to classic rock looking for an easy, affordable and palpable upgrade. This is also with the new Greenback right out of the box and not even broken in yet..
