I have a few of these. They all eventually developed mold. I tried to disinfect it with bleach, vinegar, hand sanitizer, etc. While I don't think the moldy foam bit would get onto my instrument, I don't like the fact that I'm growing mold. If I can figure out how to extract the foam I might use the plastic casing for some water beads. Otherwise, I've moved onto Water Pillows, Bovedas and a container with water beads.

I've used this humidifier for over 3 years for my violin case. Few things I've noticed is that it gets dirty quickly, and it's not very good at maintaining humidity. It just keeps the Relative Humidity above 30% in the case. This means, that on a dry day, it can be 31%, and 99% on a humid day.
I've actually left it in bleach too long to clean it, and had its filters dissolve entirely a couple of months ago.
I ended up getting another case humidifier(Oasis Guitar humidifier), and modified it with velcro tape.
As given history, I would recommend this humidifier, on a stretched budget, but it wouldn't be my first choice.
